One could say of the decade of the 1960s, radical politics clearly failed and faded away. And social change bumped up against limitations. Race relations changed and official segregation disappeared and america became more tolerant, but race did not disappear as a fact. Many liberals in the 1950s and 1960s hope it would be destroyed. Gender relations also changed. Women assumed new roles but women and men soon came to realize the differences have not been revealed by somebody declaring men and women are equal. It was really steve is who suggested to kitty that Brandeis University would be the ideal site for the papers of her father. None of us would be here without steves initiative and instigation, and i want to thank you for that. [applause] you will be hearing from steve later this morning as well as this afternoon, when he will be in conversation with kitty bruce. I was not privy to that conversation in which they suggested that brandeis was the ideal site, but i want to start with what the argument might have been. We have the same initials as lenny bruce, that is the least significant factor. We are a somewhat unusual university because we are not named for a benefactor or donor, however grateful we are for our benefactors and donors. We are named for a Supreme Court justice, who himself was one of a halfdozen on a short list of those who articulated the case for maximizing freedom of expression.
