Patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) often show cognitive deficits, but these have traditionally been attributed to co-morbidities such as cardiovascular and metabolic disease, stroke, diabetes, chronic systemic inflammation, and depression. But now, researchers have shown for the first time that OSA itself is sufficient to cause early cognitive decline, in a rare group of middle-aged non-obese men with mild to severe OSA but without co-morbidities. Whether additional cognitive deficits caused by co-morbidities act in synergy with those caused by OSA itself needs to be addressed in further studies.
