Staten Island voters could see a new political party on their general election ballots: “Staten Island First,” THE CITY has learned.
Mark Murphy, the Staten Island Democratic Party-backed candidate for borough president, is collecting signatures with two other Democrats to run in the general election on his new independent ballot line whose name echoes the Trumpian “America First” motto. Murphy wouldn’t say directly whether he’ll wage an active third-party run if he loses the June primary, responding, “I am a Democrat. I always support Democrats.”

The five Democrats who represent suburban Long Island in the state Senate on Friday called for Gov. Andrew Cuomo to step aside until Attorney General Letitia James s investigation is complete.
The statement from Sens. John Brooks, James Gaughran, Todd Kaminsky, Anna Kaplan and Kevin Thomas deepens the political crisis facing the governor amid allegations of sexual harassment or inappropriate behavior leveled against him by six women.
Long Island Democrats in the chamber are influential given they represent battleground districts and an area where Cuomo has drawn support from during his time in office.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. Legislators in the New York Assembly and Senate announced an agreement Tuesday that will repeal executive powers they granted the governor last year in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
The joint announcement from Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie (D-the Bronx) and Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins (D-Westchester) comes as the governor continues to deal with a number of scandals related to his time in office.

In 2018, Staten Island native Lorie Honor introduced former Rep. Max Rose, then a first-time Democratic candidate for Congress, to communities across Staten Island. She fundraised for his campaign as his director of community outreach and helped build the volunteer base that eventually led to Rose’s upset victory. Progressive grassroots groups, including the one Honor helped co-found, Staten Island Women Who March, are considered by local Democrats as being instrumental to Rose flipping the Republican-held seat. (Rose lost the seat to Republican Rep. Nicole Malliotakis last year.)
Now, equipped with the experience of running a successful grassroots campaign for a novice candidate, Honor is trying to replicate the feat herself: she is running for Staten Island borough president, a position no woman has ever held – and no Democrat has either since 1989.
