a strike inside gaza kills a hamas commander, but turn scores of civilians into collateral. that s tonight, on news night. and good evening, i am abby phillip in washington. tonight, a fight for the narrative, and to explain what these pictures really mean. you are looking here at a crater. this is the aftermath of what israel calls a wide scale attack. but it is also a gaza refugee camp, jabalya, where the idf claims a senior hamas commander was using civilians as shields. now, israel says that the strike erased the target from the battlefield. but as you can see there, it erased so much more. cameras captured the chaos in the month after the strike, the loud and frenzied race to pull people from that concrete. now, eyewitnesses told cnn that they saw children carrying wounded children from the rubble. cameras also filmed the eerie quiet. palestinian body bags lined up outside the building. today, we watched idf spokespeople come on to cnn several times to call the s
impediments. he knew where to enter. he entered somewhere below tribecca in lower manhattan where a used to work by the federal building and he entered there and was able to run 16 blocks in one mile and kill eight people. the important thing here is to determine this for motive. was he isis directed, which means it was definitely a conspiracy. isis inspired, which means he looked at things online. the video as miguel is reporting. or an aspirant. somebody that just saw something sand hey i think i m going to go kill people and say it s in the name offal la. tim on page eight of this complaint, this very sobering statement that i think will sort of bring a chill to everyone. they say during interview, he requested to display isis flag this his hospital room and stated that he felt good about what he had done. absolutely no remorse. pride, in fact, tim. that s what i would expect. he did this for this very reason.
i would say, las romblas is the most iconic place in all of spain. it s a very high profile target and that again testifies to the planning that has gone into thi this. sandra: want to continue to get more perspective, i want to let you know as well that the nypd counterterrorism unit has spoken out on this saying we are closely monitoring the developments of the incident in barcelona. buck saxton joins us, he is a former cia counterterrorism analyst. obviously, when we see a situation like this overseas, we tend to tighten up security here at home. what do you make of what you re seeing and hearing so far? clearly, it has all the hallmarks of a terrorist attack and whether it s isis inspired or isis directed, it could even be remote control where you have a terrorist group that is
they re talking. it s a pedestrian thoroughfare. so, we ve seen it and so it s beyond this incident. it s the first thought is where else. first, do i know anybody there. second, where else is this going to happen. it s only the middle of august. and that s the intent. and so, that s the first thought. beyond that. beyond that, you really have to wonder about, look, spain has very strong anti-terrorism laws. they ve had them since before 9/11, since before islamic terrorism, when they had their own terrorist problems with e.t.a. and the basque separatists. they have tight police restrictions. so, what happened? how is it that this got through? and if this is isis-inspired instead of isis directed, do police and law enforcement and intelligence agencies have to really rethink their approach to terrorism? for example, is it not just about collecting intelligence ahead of time but making sure that there is no vehicular
attack, the kind of things we ve seen here in the united states. this was clearly isis directed. they knew who it was, they knew when it was going to happen. they had announcements taking place notice all languages on social media within an hour or two. so they are more organized than we re often led to believe by some of the successes that are going on in syria and iraq in terms of disrupting the center of isis, they re still planning these things. it wasn t a large bun with you nevertheless it was an attack on law enforcement, which is very scary, because they re supposed to be the people that can probing the public. paul, there s thing. they claimed it quickly. they knew this guy. is this wasn t inspired. it was directed. on the cells involved in the paris attacks in november a year and a half ago, do we even know if all of these people have been found? no, right?
