Once again, the Capital City Cavaliers are set to play the biggest game in program history. The Cavaliers are set to face a rematch against the Helias Crusaders in Capital City’s first district championship game in the four-year history of the program. “We’re trending toward the right direction,” Capital City coach Joe Collier said. “The things that we’re doing in the offseason, in the season, the corrections and tweaks we’re trying to make during games during the season, this is the path we should be on.”
It was near devastation. Then it was all elation. Capital City jumped ahead 17-0 and led by as much as 24-6 before Camdenton took its first lead of the game with 1:19 left to play Friday night at Bob Shore Stadium in Camdenton. But there was one problem in the No. 2-seeded Lakers’ comeback attempt. “They gave us too much time,” Capital City coach Joe Collier said.
The 2022 season was filled with many firsts for Capital City. But a couple still eluded the Cavaliers. Tonight, the No. 3 seed Cavaliers have a chance to right the missing piece from their first successful season as they look for Capital City’s first district win as it hosts No. 6 seed Battle Spartans in the first round of the Class 5 District 5 tournament.
Capital City controlled the trenches. The Cavaliers ran for 418 yards on 45 tries, led by Jaylen Thomas with 294 yards on 24 attempts, to build a dominant 49-7 win against the Truman Patriots on Friday at Capital City High School. “We were able to run basic offense against a big D-line,” Capital City coach Joe Collier said. “Jaylen ran well, (Evan) Schaffer ran well. He ran the offense like he usually does. I thought everybody contributed well.”
The Capital City Cavaliers were ready to get back to winning. And they set the tone fast. On the first play from scrimmage, Capital City recovered a fumble on defense, then needed only one play for the first of seven touchdowns on the way to a 48-21 Central Missouri Activities Conference win Friday night against the Sedalia Smith-Cotton Tigers at Capital City High School.
