First project with affordable rentals nearly complete

Lewes  Delaware  19958United States Because of expected high demand, a lottery has been established for people applying for 26 affordable rental units at the new 168-unit Coastal Tide Apartments, the first project to participate in Sussex County’s affordable rental program. The lottery will be administered by the county housing department and property managers YourPlace.rent. Brandy Nauman, county housing coordinator and fair housing compliance officer, updated Sussex County Council on the status of the program during a Dec. 8 meeting. Linda Smith, president and owner of the property managers, represented the company. Nauman said they anticipated being inundated with applications because of the lack of affordable rentals, especially in eastern Sussex County.

Lewes  Delaware  19958United States Sussex County Council has taken a major step to get long-awaited road improvement projects completed ahead of Delaware Department of Transportation s anticipated schedule. A project not scheduled to begin for at least four years will now get underway in early 2021. At its Dec. 15 meeting, council voted 4-1 to approve a memorandum of understanding with DelDOT to create the Funding Accelerating Safety in Transportation (FAST) Track funding program, a first-of-its-kind plan to use a set-aside of county funds to jump-start road improvements that are planned, but not imminent on DelDOT s six-year capital projects list. Under the program, Sussex County will provide funding to expedite the construction of road projects in the county. DelDOT will then reimburse the county the total amount as a project is completed.

At the Dec. 17 check presentation held at Covered Bridge Trails in Lewes are (l-r) Sussex County Councilman Irwin “I.G.” Burton, land trust representative for the county, Ocean Atlantic Chairman Preston Schell, Land Trust Chairman Casey Kenton and Ocean Atlantic President Tom Tipton. The donations came from one-half percent of gross lot sales at Covered Bridge Trails near Lewes ($85,300) and The Farm at Truitt Homestead near Rehoboth Beach ($67,500). Schell said when he and Craig Hudson formed the the land trust 19 years ago, it was his goal to lead by example and get developers to support the land trust by setting aside funds from the sale of lots.
