Faced with a housing and employment crisis, Canada has announced that it was bringing in a two-year cap on international student permits with immediate effect. This would entail a decrease of 35% in student permits this year as compared to 2023.
Indian students believe the housing crisis in Canada is not triggered by international students and want the Canadian government to address the price rise of essentials.
Many protesters have alleged racial bias in the incident, though a vast majority of those who took the course and passed were Indian international students too.
Canada is considering the possibility of putting a cap on the number of international students living in Canada, Immigration Minister Marc Miller said on Saturday. Though he didn t mention how big the reduction will be, Miller said the system has gotten out of control.
