severe weather center. first let s get to cnn s chad myers. chad, it looks like winter has already arrived in western pennsylvania and it did it early. reporter: it really surprised a lot of people. and it even surprised me because on wednesday, this really wasn t forecast to be a one-foot snow event. then it surprised me today when i went to the rental counter at the airport and said, i need a four-wheel drive. and he said, why? now we re in this position where snow s coming down. a couple of trees on some lines. i don t think they re power lines, more like cable lines or telephone wires. now that it s starting to get dark, things are starting to get colder. this coldness will begin to freeze all this muck on the roadway. there s stuff on the side of the roadways. this stuff here, it s just hard it s got salt and grime and stuff in it. that s going to freeze and this road will become one big ice chunk. we re seeing accidents all across the roads and highways in york coun
balance between public safety and free speech. susan candiotti reports on it now. reporter: marching around manhattan s financial district, protesters are baiting the drama against corporate greed, now in its fourth week, occupy wall street is creating a delicate balancing act for police between free speech and public safety. as long as these demonstrations go forward, we re going to do everything we can to see to it that they are done peacefully and in an orderly fashion. reporter: but unlike most new york protests, 600 each year in lower manhattan alone, occupy wall street isn t applying for permits. police say it s created a communication gap. we have nobody identified as a leader who we can communicate to. in a normal process, we talk to the leadership, sit down. there s a permit that s issued. we know the route of the march that people are going to tyke. reporter: the majority of marches are peaceful but there has been trouble, use of pepper spray, swinging bat
hurricane irene, now officially made landfall as a category 1 storm on the east coast of the united states. the most up-to-date satellite image we can show you now of re irene, showing wear and tear, described as sloppy, not very well organized but starting to get more disorganized. you can see it there, it was a more organized storm over the past couple of days but as it s making landfall now and making its way up the east coast maybe not so much so. it has been lashing out at the carolina shoreline for the past several hours. that is where, again, it it has officially made landfall. the storm surge there is expected to take a toll on outer banks and coastal communities. concern shared all the way up and down the east coast right now. more so in cities you can imagine that aren t used to dealideal ing with hurricanes, like new york city. been some time since they ve had to deal with a direct hit from hurricanes. this storm could be head toward parts of lower manhattan, could
