We had to watch a lot of things this spring and make sure we were going to be able to do this, but things started to turn around with the vaccines and the Covid rates, so we decided to go, and here we are, said John Hambrose, of the Abington Rotary Club and Firework Committee.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. After Gov. Andrew Cuomo this week announced updated guidance for schools, colleges and universities to hold graduations, St. John’s University said it is still planning to keep its ceremonies virtual but is considering holding an in-person commencement.
In February, St. John’s announced its commencement exercises would be virtual for the Class of 2021 amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, including for students at its Staten Island campus on Grymes Hill. STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. After the City University of New York (CUNY) announced last month that the Class of 2021 would have a virtual graduation, seniors at the College of Staten Island (CSI) are calling for in-person graduation ceremonies with safety measures like requiring masks, social distancing and limiting guests.
Seniors Sabrina Benet and Lauren, who asked to only go by her first name, said they have been urging administrators at CSI to hold staggered in-person ceremonies at the Willowbrook campus.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. After St. John’s University announced its commencement ceremonies would be virtual for the Class of 2021 amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, two seniors from the Staten Island campus on Grymes Hill have started a petition for an in-person graduation.
Seniors Leanna Rivera and Evan Didia began the Change.org petition Thursday evening, which has nearly 1,800 signatures as of Monday afternoon, urging St. John’s to host in-person commencement ceremonies for Staten Island students due to the small class size.
