More than 100 people who knew Ronald Boss Hog Durham gathered at Hunter Huss High School Sunday to release balloons in his memory. Opinion: FUSE will be a home run for Gastonia

The Grizzlies were such a huge success at Sims Park that they propelled what we now know as “FUSE” (Franklin Urban Sports & Entertainment) into existence. The catchy name is the work of Jason Thompson, the Gastonia director of planning. I was first elected to City Council in 2010, and seeing an average crowd size of 2,000 – 4,000 people gathered at Sims Park for a Grizzlies game was hard to ignore.

Gaston student food pantry raising money by selling graduation signs

Signs include the student’s name, high school and the name and logo of the college or military branch they plan to pursue. A single-side signs costs $18, and double-side costs $22. Sign proceeds will go directly to Share A Meal to help keep the shelves stocked with fruit cups, macaroni and cheese, microwavable meals and more.  More than 500 signs were ordered through the fundraiser last year. Though volunteers were swamped with executing and delivering those orders, it helped sustain Share A Meal through this school year, Carson said.  “I enjoy doing the signs. If we can get more people to help out, we could fill a similar number of orders.”

Outdoor graduations planned for Gaston County Schools

Gaston County Schools’ high school seniors will graduate together this May. Gaston County’s nine traditional high schools – Ashbrook, Bessemer City, Cherryville, East Gaston, Forestview, Hunter Huss, North Gaston, South Point and Stuart W. Cramer – will each hold two ceremonies on Friday, May 28, at their respective football stadiums. Highland School of Technology will use a different stadium on May 28 due to the small size of its stadium, as the ceremonies will adhere to 6-feet social distancing, according to the school system. Families of graduating seniors who currently attend school Monday and Tuesday will attend the first ceremony, currently slated for 5:30 p.m.
