The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh on Monday said the Supreme Court verdict upholding the abrogation of Article 370 by the Centre will strengthen national unity. The RSS has been opposing Article 370 of the Constitution "since the beginning", Sangh s all-India publicity head Sunil Ambekar said in a statement.
The party claimed the PDP officer near Sher-e-Kashmir Park here was also "sealed" by the police. A National Conference (NC) leader said the main gate of the party president Farooq Abdullah and Vice President Omar Abdullah s residence was locked by the police in the morning.
Article 370 judgment: The Supreme Court s Constitution bench delivered a judgment on Monday, affirming the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution. This decision comes after the court considered a series of petitions challenging the abrogation of Article 370 and the subsequent division of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union territories. The Constitution bench, comprised of five judges, not only upheld the constitutional changes but also issued a directive to the Election Commission. The bench mandated the Election Commission to conduct elections in Jammu and Kashmir by September 30, 2024.
Welcoming the Supreme Court s verdict on Article 370, traders and industrialists in Jammu said they are looking forward to the restoration of statehood and democratically elected government in Jammu and Kashmir. During the day, the top court unanimously upheld the Centre s decision to abrogate Article 370 and directed restoration of statehood in Jammu and Kashmir "at the earliest" and set a September 30, 2024 deadline for holding assembly elections there.
