hello, everyone. at this hour southwest apologizes for a nationwide travel calamity warning passengers it pay take days to solve a giant puzzle of canceled flights. and silence from top republicans raises a big question, will incumbent new york congressman george santos get away with lying to voters about nearly every detail of his life? plus, a supreme court ruling keeps in place a trump era immigration measure and leaves thousands of migrants in limbo. that s what we re watching at this hour. good morning, everyone. i m amara walker in for kate bolduan. welcome to the seventh day of holiday travel chaos and it won t be the last. for southwest airlines passengers relief could still be days away. the airline canceled more than 2500 flights both today and yesterday accounting for more than 60% of its entire schedule. these issues began with the widespread deadly winter storm, but weather is not to blame for the lingering problems with southwest s system. the u.s. transportat
illegally. but it is a humanitarian crisis at this time because we simply don t have capacity for this large number of folks. if you don t have capacity, i guess what s the backup plan? what are you doing as a result then? well, we re working with a number of what we call either hospitality sites or local shelterers. the difference between the two, the hospitality sites are focused on the migrant population whereas shelters tend to focus on the local homeless and so but many of those shelters, many of those hospital salt sites are operating at or over capacity such as ourselves. we ve not seen reasonable numbers, reasonable being, for example, within our men s shelter, 120 comfortably. we re seeing number in the 200s, and it actually peaked at 292 within the past week. so the individuals keep coming and when you are the opportunity center and look at our mission statement, we work with all without distinction so focused
talking about. it s also people from different countries like brazil, cuba, everywhere. standing along the site of the newest construction of the border wall in el paso, we meet local activist fernando garcia. he says this is the new ellis island. what we re experiencing right now is a humanitarian crisis, yes, but we need more officers at the port of entry. building the wall is not going to stop the refugee crisis in this country. reporter: a crisis that ruben garcia says has left him feeling like herself in a torna s livi.p are you stretched more thin than you ever were? we are. reporter: gar cia and his tem of volunteers help migrants after they re processed out of i.c.e. custody. they re averaging 3,000 my kbra migrants per week which put him at capacity. this saturday i.c.e. released 600 people to us. we dotook in 600 people. that maxed out our hospitality sites.
