Sushi restaurant to open in former Pearl of the Orient location

ROCKY RIVER When Pearl of the Orient in Beachcliff Market Square closed in 2019, it was like losing a loved one for many in the community. Fairview Park resident Derek Stalder hopes to fill the culinary gap by opening Sakana Sushi Lounge in the spot where the Pearl once served patrons. The Asian fusion restaurant is expected to open by the end of April, he said. “I want to be able to help make lasting memories for the community,” Stalder, 34, said. “Taking a special moment and making it more special through my food means the world to me.” Stalder’s restaurant will focus on sushi with a New York flair, meaning big plates decorated with bright garnishes. The restaurant will also have a full vegan sushi menu and serve dishes from Laos, Thailand and Japan. Entrees will cost between $15 and $20.
