Image Source: IANS News New Delhi, May 17: Japan and Sri Lanka have signed an agreement to enable the Indian Ocean nation battle the Covid-19 pandemic better. Under the agreement, Japan will provide essential equipment for Sri Lankan hospitals for the treatment of Covid-19 patients. Under the Project for Strengthening COVID-19 Response as the pact between the two nations is called, Japan will provide ventilators, ICU beds, ultrasound scanners, blood gas analyzers and similar medical equipment for hospitals. The equipment will be installed in four hospitals - Base Hospital Teldeniya, Base Hospital Warakapola, Base Hospital Walikanda, and Base Hospital Pimbura.

Accordingly, the total number of deaths due to Covid-19 infection in Sri Lanka is 921. 01. The deceased is a 71 year old female resident in Awissawella. She died on 13.05.2021 while undergoing treatments in Teaching Hospital Peradeniya. The cause of death is mentioned as Covid pneumonia. 02. The deceased is a 74 year old female resident in Nuwara Eliya. She died on 13.05.2021 while undergoing treatments in a private hospital in Colombo. The cause of death is mentioned as Covid pneumonia.

JICA Emergency Assistance to Strengthen Covid-19 Response in Sri Lanka

Major General Dr. Sanjeewa Munasinghe, Secretary to the Ministry of Health and Yamada Tetsuya, Chief Representative of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Sri Lanka Office have signed a Bilateral agreement between the two parties representing the Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka and JICA for JICA’s emergency technical cooperation grant named the Project for Strengthening COVID-19 Response. Senior officials from the Ministry of Health and JICA Sri Lanka Office, including Dr. Sunil De Alwis, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Health and Takashima Kiyofumi, Senior Representative, JICA Sri Lanka Office also attended the occasion, held at the Ministry of Health, Colombo strictly adhering to the health guidelines and the COVID-19 preventive measures.
