Salina VA clinic vaccinates 200 veterans Saturday for COVID-19

Salinan back home after battling COVID-19 for 52 days in the hospital

Salinan Charles Scott was greeted by his wife, Kawanis, and other close family members outside of the hospital on Friday after spending 52 days battling the coronavirus and pneumonia at Salina Regional Health Center.  Scott is a 57-year-old veteran and is the founder and pastor at the nondenominational church Peter s Rock Ministries, 256 S. Eighth St., in Salina. The church has around 100 members, with Kawanis being the co-pastor. Charles Scott has spent more than 20 years working for a boy s home called Making Connection Youth Emergency Shelter in Salina. The foundation of the church is based on Matthew 16:18, “and I say also unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”

Meals on Wheels available for pets

Four-legged pets in the Salina area were surprised on Friday thanks to the new Meals on Wheels for pets program. Area seniors who already receive the Meals on Wheels can apply for the free meals for their dog or cats thanks to a partnership between Salina Senior Services, Friends of the Salina Animal Shelter, and the Atherton Veterinary Clinic.  “Are fear was that seniors who were receiving the Meals on Wheels and cannot get out were giving their animals part of their food,  said Rosie Walter, director of senior services.  We want to make sure everyone and every animal is eating what they are supposed to be eating.

Salina community members stay strong at Driven Fitness gym

At Scott Tully’s gym, it’s not uncommon to see grandparents deadlifting 300 pounds. “(One gym member) came, she wanted to get back in shape and be able to play with their grandkids. Next thing you know, she’s breaking state records,” Tully said. Scott Tully is the owner of Driven Fitness, a local gym in Salina. The gym was first opened because Tully’s training space in one of his friend’s basements was becoming too crowded. As the gym progressed after a merge and Tully now being the sole owner Driven Fitness trains many in the area, both for personal fitness and to help them compete in competitions.

Kansas Wesleyan University brings dog to comfort campus

There s a new favorite employee at the campus of Kansas Wesleyan University the school introduced Ellie, a miniature goldendoodle, to bring joy and comfort to students and staff. The idea of having a dog on campus came from the student development office as a way to try to be innovative in helping students during the COVID-19 pandemic. You can t do as many mass-gathering events on campus like we would normally do, said Bridget Weiser, vice president of student development at KWU. In past years, Weiser said, the school has had puppy study breaks during finals for students to destress. (That) was always a big hit, Weiser said. We looked at other schools and found that some had therapy dogs or wellness dogs, so we talked it through and thought that would be one of the best things.
