Salina doctors debut heart procedure program to benefit community

The transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) surgery was performed on Tuesday at Salina Regional. David Battin, cardiologist at Mowery, said aortic valve disease is fairly common in older people, and this new way to replace it will benefit the community and the region. Traditionally, when the valve goes out and needs fixed . it (was) a major operation which involves an incision down the sternum, Battin said. It results in a seven- to 10-day hospitalization. Battin said the hospitalization could be longer depending on the patient and usually it results in rehabilitation afterwards, as well. This procedure involves going in to replace the aortic valve through an artery and is minimally invasive.

Community members give to women who had purse stolen

Smiles and hugs were felt at the Dillons on Planet Avenue on Saturday after Joyce Fell, of Minneapolis, Kan., received a new purse and $800 from a few generous community members of the Salina Police Scanners Facebook page who heard that she had her purse stolen at the grocery store on Thursday.  Fell went to check out at the Dillons in Salina when she realized she had accidentally left her purse in the women s bathroom at the grocery store.  “It was my fault,  Fell said.  My friend was waiting for me in the car and I had not even checked out yet, so I hurried up to get out of the bathroom. When I got up to the checkout, I realized I did not have my purse.  

Kansas Day still celebrated by Salina school during pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic and cold weather didn t stop students at Cornerstone Classical School from celebrating the 160th birthday of Kansas. In what has become a tradition for the Salina school, many Cornerstone students took part in celebrating Kansas Day by dressing up as famous Kansans or symbols of the state. The students really enjoy it, said Christopher Stevens, the principal at Cornerstone. He said all kindergarten through sixth-grade students at the school researched what they dressed up as. Typically, we d have all the posters on the wall, Stevens said. We d have students stand by their poster and parents would come and learn about the Kansans.

OCCK offering free rides to COVID-19 vaccination sites

People going to get a COVID-19 vaccination will have one less barrier in the way starting next week after OCCK Transportation announced it will offer free rides to vaccination sites. OCCK said a one-day pass to CityGo or the 81 Connection will be offered to each passenger that is on their way to or from a vaccination site beginning Feb. 1. Passengers will need to tell the driver they are going to a vaccination site. In Salina, the former JC Penney s in Central Mall, which is the Red Route stop 17 and the Yellow Route stop 29, is the current site for community vaccination, but OCCK said other sites are eligible, as well.

Debate and speech coach Gary Harmon receives recognition after 55 years in education

The Kansas State High School Activities Association announced that Gary Harmon, longtime debate and speech coach at Kansas Wesleyan University, has been selected  for the 2020-21 National Federation of State High School Association s Outstanding Speech/Debate/Theatre Educator Award. Harmon has been teaching and coaching since 1965 and will be retiring from Kansas Wesleyan University at the conclusion of this school year. Starting a career in education Harmon said his career in education has exceeded five decades, beginning in the spring of 1965 at Hutchinson Central Junior High School, where he taught English, was the pep club sponsor and directed the all-school play.
