strong and you ve got a fed chair saying i may cut rates. the economy is strong, but it s slowing down. we re expecting growth in the second quarter of less than 2%. we re expecting growth in the low twos for calendar 2019, the national association of business economists say a 60% chance of a recession before the end of 2020. it is possible if we get into a trade war not only with mexico but with china, with europe, we ve got an autos decision that is also coming, that could become more powerful than a fed rate cut in derailing this ten-year economic expansion. certainly a rate cut is going to be good for the stock market in the short term, but the way expansions end as we ve discussed before is something bad happens to them. they get murdered. they don t die of old age. and a widespread trade war with multiple combatants, that could murder it. we ll find out.

going to. all they do is whine privately or even in this case publicly complain about it. when push comes to shove, they back down. this could be different because we re talking about something that really matters to them. it matters as a matter of principle but also they fear that if we get in a trade war with mexico, that could be the shock that brings on a recession that hurts them at the polls next year. they may feel that they have their back to the wall this time and they stand up to trump. on the other hand it s hard to see how trump at this point gives in without on this signature issue of the border without alienating his base and getting something out of mexico that would actually make a difference. you can really see this could be different but i would not place a lot of money on the backbone of republicans in congress. they seem to have a lot more jawbone. john, what if the president moves forward and gets a massive
