comes to tariffs. they have absolutely no idea. joining us now democratic senator bob menendez of new jersey, and, senator, your republican colleague rand paul said on this program he thinks that there s a veto-proof majority in the. the block an emergency declaration that would appropriate tate these tariffs kicking into place. do you think that s the case? well, if republicans are finally willing to stand up to the president on something they know they should, then that s possible because we don t believe that tariffs which are basically taxes, taxes on the american consumer, that may cost the average american consumer $800 by some studies is the right way to try to deal with something that has nothing to do with trade but everything to do with immigration. we think the president is wrong on this. he s going to hurt consumers on this. mexico is the second largest
one way or the other i ll make that decision after the g20. i ll be meeting with president xi, and we ll see what happens. so there are now dual threats of tariffs causing republicans to have a little heartburn about this, the party about free trade for quite some time and president trump has real turned that upside down, and as for things with mexico, these talks are continuing really right now, and mexican officials are saying they are making some progress, but a white house official said not too long ago, mers deese schlapp, said mexico needs to do more to stop illegal immigrants from coming across the border. what exactly they want mexico to do they haven t been specific what, numbers they want to see the border cross hit and when. no specifics from the white house on that, and i think that s why they are still at this hour quite a bit of uncertainty about whether the administration is in fact willing to make a deal to avert the tariffs going into place on monday. all right. ab
in mexico while they re being processed. that is happening at some of the ports, but they want that to be happening across the board. i don t think there s a huge expectation that they ll get an actual deal today. i think what they re looking for is progress. peter baker, is your sense that this is, you know, we had reported and this is kristen and our team s reporting, a senior administration official said that the mexican delegation offered what the white house viewed as something that was good faith, if minimalist. do we think the white house is negotiating with the mexican government in good faith here? i mean, are they really looking for a deal? or do they just want kind of the headlines and the confrontation? well, the problem is determining who it is we re talking about here. we say the white house. does the white house want a deal? but then there s the president himself. so they could come up with a deal, we could walk out of today and say, hey, we actually have made great
president s comments to fox news are any indication, we think he s unwilling to compromise. what must mexico do? what can they do to stem this massive tide, 140,000 people in may? when you re the piggy bank this everybody steals and robs from and they deceive you and they like they ve been doing for 25 years, tariffs are a beautiful thing. it s a beautiful word, if you know how to use them properly. republicans should love what i m doing. so our big question today is, can the white house reach a deal with mexico ahead of monday s deadline? joining me now, nbc news white house correspondent, kristen welker. new york times chief white house correspondent and msnbc political analyst, peter baker, and former chief communications adviser for paul ryan, brendon buck. kristen, is it possible for the white house to negotiate this with the president currently overseas? i don t think so. i just spoke to a senior administration official who s really playing the expectations game and s
coming up later, what these potential tariffs on mexico mean for the price of products you buy every day. i ll break that down for you. nancy pelosi told senior democrats this week that she wants to see president trump, quote, in prison rather than impeach him. politico reports citing unnamed sources that pelosi made the comment when house judiciary chairman jerry nadler pushed the speaker to launch an impeachment inquiry. she said she wants to see president trump defeat in 2020 and then prosecuted for his alleged crimes. we should note, nbc news has not confirmed this report. politico did not characterize the full context or tone of pelosi s reported comments. joining me, contributor jonathan capehart. the speaker reportedly wants to see trump in prison. this is the kind of stuff that trump seems to take very personally and it does seem to affect him.
