Local roundup: MVCS girls cruise in state tournament opener Sydney Goodwin Modified: 3/16/2021 10:25:10 PM QUECHEE The third-ranked Mid Vermont Christian School girls basketball team quickly put to rest any upset concerns, opening Tuesday night with an 18-3 run en route to a 69-22 victory over 14th-seeded Richford to open the VPA Division IV playoffs. Sydney Goodwin led the MVCS attack with 26 points, including 12 from the free-throw line. Rachel Horner-Richardson and Hayley Goodwin each had 18 points. The Eagles (8-2) built a 33-12 lead at halftime and scored 20 points in the third quarter to put the game on ice. “We got off to a quick start and were able to take control early. We have typically started slow in past playoff games, so I was happy with our focus and effort tonight,” MVCS coach Chris Goodwin said.

The Yellowjackets took command in the second quarter with a 17-2 run to build a 29-17 lead at halftime. Rutland chipped away from there, rallying to tie the game at 50-50 with 51 seconds left in the fourth. Windsor made the key plays in the final minute to secure the win. Jordan Place hit a pair of clutch free throws with 13.8 seconds to play to give the hosts a 53-50 lead. After Rutland had to foul again soon after, John Cook stepped to the line to make two of his own to give the hosts an insurmountable 55-50 lead.
