HONOLULU Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano on the Big Island erupted and shot a steam and ash cloud into the atmosphere that lasted about an hour, an official with the National Weather Service said early Monday. The eruption began late Sunday within Kilauea’s summit crater, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The crater, named Halemaumau, is located within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and was home to a longstanding lava lake that was present for years before a 2018 eruption caused it to drain. BYRAM Township firefighters carrying out their annual Santa ride on Saturday made the grim discovery of blood in snow, which led to the body of a missing Army soldier.
Police said in a written statement that they responded to the wooded area near Ross Road on Saturday after 2 p.m. and recovered the body of 20-year-old Cpl. Hayden Harris, who was partly buried under snow. Harris had been reported as missing from Fort Drum in New York a day earlier.
Township police said that when they got in touch with the U.S. Army and the Jefferson County Sheriff s Department, they already had Jamaal Mellish, also an Army soldier, in custody as a suspect in Harris disappearance.

The vigil will take place at the 10th Mountain Division Monument, according to Jeffrey Smith, pastor of Watertown’s First Baptist Church. The public is invited. Social distancing will be observed, and everyone should wear a mask.
Watertown mayor Jeff Smith is expected to attend and speak. Also speaking, Lt. Col. Jon Chavous, Commander of the 1st Squadron, 89th Cavalry Regiment. Harris was a member of the 1-89.
Soldiers are encouraged to be at the ceremony, and they can be in military uniform or civilian clothes.

WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) - The Fort Drum soldier killed over the weekend was remembered Monday as kind and happy and taken far too soon.
The body of Hayden Harris, 20, was found Saturday in woods off a road in Byram Township, northern New Jersey. He was mostly covered by snow.
Harris had been shot to death.
Another Fort Drum soldier, Jamaal Mellish, 23, was in the Oneida County jail Monday. Authorities in New Jersey said they anticipate charging him with murder, after getting an official âcause of death.â
