India and its Southern neighbour Maldives have decided to upgrade security and defence partnership eyeing to combat terror in the region. New Delhi will also assist Male upgrade its maritime surveillance capabilities.
During Foreign Minister S Jaishankar s two-day visit to Maldives over the weekend, the two sides decided to convene the first meeting of the Joint Working Group on Counter Terrorism, countering Violent Extremism and De-radicalisation at the earliest to combat the menace in the Indian Ocean Region.

New Delhi: India has signed an agreement with the Maldives to extend a $50-million line of credit to strengthen Male’s maritime capabilities, cementing New Delhi’s position as a key defence partner of the archipelago nation.
A total of five agreements were signed between the two countries over the weekend during Indian foreign minister S. Jaishankar’s two-day visit to Male which concluded on Sunday. It comes against the backdrop of China looking to increase its footprint in the Indian Ocean region seen as India’s sphere of influence with its multi-billion dollar Belt and Road Initiative and expanding naval presence.

New Delhi [India], February 21 (ANI): India has signed a USD 50 million line of credit (LoC) agreement with the Maldives to facilitate maritime capability building of the island nations.
According to a joint India-Maldives joint statement, the agreement was signed between the Government of Maldives and EXIM Bank India.
The agreement was signed during the visit of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to the Maldives. Welcome the signing of USD 50 million Defence LoC agreement with the Maldives. Will facilitate capability building in the maritime domain, Jaishankar tweeted.
