was moving. it didn t move enough senators though. democrats would go on to explain they didn t have the votes to pass that bill. they removed the assault weapons package from a package of other reforms. even those watered down packages. didn t succeed. consider the scenario as the gun violence problem gets worse and saenz politics are shifting more toward receipt activity to gun control, but washington was sliding back to a position softer to gun safety. and that drew an emotional rebuke from president obama. do we really think that thousands of families whose lives have been smartered by gun violence don t have a right to weigh in on this issue? do we think their loss is not relevant to this debate? this was a pretty shameful day for washington. people have kept up the pressure in washington. over 1 million marched on washington and places around the nation. students growing up with this
that women, particularly women in the suburbs overwhelmingly favor background checks. so i think this is a moment in which the political sort of plates are shifting and we re now seeing for the first time, i do think that the nra is on defense. now, whether this amounts to actual legislation, i don t know. but i do think it s going to accelerate this trend that the suburbs are trending away from the gop, and college educated women are fleeing the gop. think it does accelerate politics in that respect. shannon, you mentioned some of the remarks made on the state level. if you were crafting federal legislation to tackle the gun violence problem in this country, what would be the first three things? first three steps. well, the first thing is to pass a background checks law. right now unlicensed gun stalss
those things. what they don t vb is the kind of access to guns we have. it doesn t mean we don t want americans to have proper access to mental health. that s not the problem with our gun violence problem in america. it s absolutely no regulation at the federal level since the shooting at sandy hook, parkland, the federal government has done absolutely nothing. the house of representatives did pass bills after the shooting at parkland, but the senate has yet to even take them up for a vote. mitch mcconnell needs to call the senate back to volt on these bills. he still hasn t even called them up. they re doing nothing. this is why the call is in place in the last few days for the senate to get back into session. just walk me through this. what would happen if the senate came back into session? mitch mcconnell is not ready to present this to the floor. he doesn t seem at all interested in holding a vote on it. it doesn t seem it would pass anyway. what s the holdup here? why is it when
