to come up with a proposal. my goal is to come one something that s going to move the needle and make parents feel more comfortable that their kid s going to go to a safe school. that s the goal. these kids have got to go to safe schools. we have two weeks. two weeks after friday, we re going to get something done. not previewing any details there, but last week scott told cnn s wolf blitzer that everything is on the table in the effort to solve the gun violence problem. president trump weighing in on gun regulation twice yesterday. last night he called for reforming gun purchase background checks. in a tweet, whether we are republican or democrat, we must focus on strengthening background checks. that included no specific proposal. but a new quinnipiac poll showed support across the board including from gun owners for putting all gun buyers through a background check. earlier tuesday the president said he directed attorney general jeff sessions to propose a rule banning those
important for this particular incident. bump stocks and hundred round magazine card ridges are important. we can have conversations that do not necessarily threaten people. hunting rifles or hand guns for safety. this is not a yes or no kind of question. this is a question which is a lot of room for listening to each other respectfully and coming to reasonable agreement for the safety of our people. if we care about our people, we have to act for their safety. pa. you said that you believe at the root of the gun violence problem is that many people were feeling to the communities. what do you mean by that? there has been declines not only in church participation and service club participation and
have a gun violence problem and he said, we re not going to talk about that today. we won t talk about that. what do you think of that? because you said it s always appropriate, it s the time now to have that conversation. we need to talk now. here and now. not tomorrow, not next week, but sometime later. but i think it s going to take the american people rising up in a peaceful, orderly, nonviolent fashion to demand that the congress act and send a piece of legislation to the desk of the president to sign into law. congressman, i know you and i can judge your mood sometimes. and now you are this hit you really hard. it s very painful.
believe me, i ll be there for them. the message that i have is we have a great country and we are there for you. they re there for us. do you think we have a gun violence problem? we re not going to talk about that today. not yet. we re looking. i can tell you it s a very sick man. he was a very demented person. we haven t seen that yet. but you will know very soon if we find something. we re looking very very hard. i m actually going over to the police department. the fact that they were able to locate that zone and get in there, they say 11 minutes, whatever it was that kept him busy, he stopped firing because he knew they were coming into that door at some point. i think they did an incredible job. the professionalism has just been amazing. so i want to thank you all. we re now going over to the police headquarters. doctors, thump. we appreciate it.
what do you think? well, i want to reiterate what they said. thank you to our first responders. all of the healthcare personnel who have helped everyone. that is an amazing job. calling somebody a public health crisis is really a matter of perspective. but with that would come increased funding for research and potentially a lot more mandates when you call something a crisis. usually, when you talk about a public health crisis, that means more like natural disasters or hurricanes, or earthquakes and other infectious disguises we are seeing. that s what i think is more appropriately called a health crisis not gun violence. we have a gun violence problem here is it a public health crisis. ainsley: why wouldn t they call it a security crisis. in my opinion it s not a health crisis it s a national security issue. now, i will say though the majority of our gun violence deaths are due to suicides. maybe we have a largely untreated mental health crisis. that is true. that isn t necessaril
