The Centre plans to begin testing GPS-based toll collections on five to 10 highways from next month.The new system will be piloted on limited highway stretches before it is rolled out nationwide, roads ministry secretary Anurag Jain said
India News: NEW DELHI: Delhi-Jaipur highway (NH-48) and Bengaluru-Mysuru expressway will be the first two stretches where GPS-based tolling system will be introdu.
Sources said this new GPS-based tolling system will be tried on different stretches and will be expanded gradually. Union road transport minister Nitin Gadkari informed Parliament recently that the new system to rid the NH network of toll plazas would start by March.
Addressing the annual conference of Highways Operators Association of India, road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari said the government will move to a GPS-based toll collection by March next year. The move is aimed at reducing traffic congestion and charging motorists for the exact distance travelled on the highways, he said.
