D214 Future Educators Conference highlights partnerships and possibilities District 214

A pandemic initially expected to affect schools for a few weeks had dragged on for months. The circumstances were challenging the patience and resilience of students and teachers alike and impeding District 214 s usual practice of placing students in work-based learning experiences.
Against that backdrop, Director of Academic Programs and Pathways Megan Knight and Barbara Kain, the incoming Supervisor for Teaching and Learning, gathered at the drawing board, looking to create an elevated and unique learning experience for students in District 214 s Education Career Pathway.
What they designed and executed - with invaluable contributions from teachers and the District s higher education partners - was a resoundingly successful Future Educators Conference. The virtual event in late January drew almost 300 students for one or more of 19 available sess

If you have a teacher in your life a friend, a family member, a neighbor you know how challenging the last year has been for them and others in their profession across the country. Teachers have been forced to confront difficult decisions during this pandemic of whether to return to the classroom, stick with virtual learning or even continue teaching at all.
In Illinois, many teachers have chosen retirement. The Chicago Tribune reported in October that from July to September, 566 teachers across Illinois retired, citing concerns about the Coronavirus and the new teaching environment it created, a 45% increase compared with the same period last year.

Creating an inclusive school climate begins with giving students a voice in decision-making, says Martin DaCosta, principal of Winston Campus Junior High School in Palatine.
DaCosta s students are among the most diverse within Palatine Township Elementary District 15 the state s second-largest elementary district where DaCosta is the only nonwhite principal. He values the importance of cultural relevance in teaching and creating an environment that is welcoming and inspirational for all students.
When it comes to leadership, one of the things that I aspire to be every single day is a servant leader, DaCosta said.
