Phillipston cannabis retailer takes a step forward

PHILLIPSTON Members of the Selectboard voted last Wednesday to report to the state’s Cannabis Control Commission that the proposed retail marijuana establishment to be located at 420 State Road/Route 2A is in compliance with all of Phillipston’s bylaws and ordinances. Had the board responded negatively, the CCC would have denied a provisional license to entrepreneur Damon Schmidt, the businessman working to open cannabis operation.
The approval, however, did not come until the concerns of some board members had been allayed.
“My question is,” board Chair John Telepciak queried, “where does the commercial site plan from you come in on this?”

PHILLIPSTON Anyone who thinks a municipal employee of the year award should be without controversy obviously isn’t familiar with small town New England. The awarding of this year’s recognition in Phillipston generated extensive discussion at Wednesday’s meeting of the Selectboard.
“I’ve sent out a notice announcing the employee of the year,” Chief Administrative Officer Kevin Flynn told the meeting. “This will be the second year. Nominations are due next Tuesday.
“Last year was the first year I did it. I made three awards: Employee of the Year was (Public Works Director) Rick Tenney; Role Model, Police Chief (Kevin) Dodge; and Unsung Hero, Chuck Kolbenson.

PHILLIPSTON At a special town meeting earlier this year, Phillipston voters instructed the Selectboard to establish a committee to recommend the best way to meet the educational needs of the town’s elementary school students. The vote came in the wake of the town learning that Phllipston Memorial Elementary School would be abandoned by the Narragansett Regional School District as a school for teaching Phillipston students in grades K through 5.
Dan Sandin, who authored the article, explained that committee would weigh any number of alternatives for those students.
