“It will be good for the town, and we’ll be utilising local South Canterbury subcontractors”. A building consent was approved by the Mackenzie District Council (MDC) on July 20, 2021 on the basis the new building will be very close to what was there prior to the fire. In her report, MDC resource management planner Suzanne Blyth said “the appearance of the proposed renovations are not changing from what has been previously authorised and is at a scale consistent with the District Plan”. The application puts the cost of the proposed building work at $1,200,000.

NZ romance novelist Essie Summers at her desk in 1961. All her novels are being republished by Amercian Ken Pierce.
The works of late New Zealand romance author Essie Summers are being republished for the first time in more than 20 years, after a US-based fan of the author became frustrated by a lack of availability – and he’s commissioned a Tekapo photographer to help. American Ken Pierce, who started reading Summers’ books as a child, said he tired of recommending the novels to friends only to find they were out of print. Though Pierce is not a professional writer, he is on a quest to republish all of Summers’ books electronically – with some additional notes.
A building consent lodged by the owner of property, Nigel Ross, shows plans for a rebuild of the tavern – similar in style to the original building and states there will be no change in the use of the building. MDC resource management planner Suzanne Blyth considered the use of the site for a tavern with gaming room, bottle store and separate restaurant and café fell within the scope of the existing approvals and an Existing Use Rights certificate for the property was granted earlier this month, paving the way for the building consent approval.
