Work to start within weeks at Tekapo Tavern site

“It will be good for the town, and we’ll be utilising local South Canterbury subcontractors”. A building consent was approved by the Mackenzie District Council (MDC) on July 20, 2021 on the basis the new building will be very close to what was there prior to the fire. In her report, MDC resource management planner Suzanne Blyth said “the appearance of the proposed renovations are not changing from what has been previously authorised and is at a scale consistent with the District Plan”. The application puts the cost of the proposed building work at $1,200,000. Consent to rebuild Tekapo Tavern after fire approved

A building consent lodged by the owner of property, Nigel Ross, shows plans for a rebuild of the tavern – similar in style to the original building and states there will be no change in the use of the building. MDC resource management planner Suzanne Blyth considered the use of the site for a tavern with gaming room, bottle store and separate restaurant and café fell within the scope of the existing approvals and an Existing Use Rights certificate for the property was granted earlier this month, paving the way for the building consent approval. Charred Tekapo Tavern now hidden behind landscape photographs

A $2000 photo wrap now hides the charred husk of the former Tekapo Tavern. The charred husk of the Tekapo Tavern is no longer the first sight for visitors to the tourism hotspot. A $2000 wrap featuring photographs of the Takapō/Tekapo landscape, taken by photographer George Empson, has been installed around the devastated building, which has sat untouched in a prime location on State Highway 8 since being gutted by fire about 18 months ago. Mackenzie District mayor Graham Smith said he had been in touch with the building owner, Barak Investments, which aimed to lodge a consent application to demolish and rebuild the tavern by the end of the month.
