Napa County asked to spend $42 million to reduce wildfire threat

Local wildfire prevention advocates want $42 million over five years for fuel reduction and similar projects to prevent a repeat of large fires that in recent years destroyed about 1,500 homes, businesses and other structures. The county Board of Supervisors on Tuesday held what amounted to a wildfire summit. Wine industry officials and residents implored the county to take further preventative steps before another fire season begins. “Napa will burn again,” said Christopher Thompson of Napa Communities Firewise Foundation. “We now have a plan of action and we need funding . and we need lots of it.” County Fire Chief Geoff Belyea asked for $6.4 million in the short-term. County supervisors responded by agreeing that the county should find the money to make that contribution.

Napa County to begin annual chipping program to protect against wildfires

REGISTER STAFF The Napa County Fire Department’s annual chipping program is set to begin Monday. Residential properties within the unincorporated areas are eligible for this free program designed to help property owners comply with state and local defensible space requirements. Defensible space is designed to slow the spread of wildfire and can help protect buildings from catching fire, either from direct flame contact or from radiant heat. “Defensible space is one of the most critical factors property owners have control over when it comes to helping protect their homes from the wildfires that plague our area,” said Napa County Fire Chief Geoff Belyea. “Defensible space also gives our firefighters a fighting chance to save your property in the face of these increasingly intense fires.”

After several close calls, Napa County s cities face up to their wildfire risk

At the time, Napa County Fire Chief Geoff Belyea remembers he believed there would never be another fire season like 2008. But he thought the same after the Valley Fire in 2015, and again amid the Atlas and Tubbs fires in 2017. Asked if he now believed Napa County would see increasingly severe fire seasons going forward, Belyea paused. “I don’t know if you can say that we have seen the worst, but I don’t know if you can say the worst is yet to come,” he said. It’s hard to speak in certain terms about what future fire seasons might bring for Napa County and the North Bay. What is for certain, experts say, is that warmer and drier conditions across California are giving way to wildfires more frequent, chaotic and destructive than ever before.
