Managing editor WEIRTON Weirton Council has opted not to take action to change the zoning designation of a piece of property in the city’s downtown, following a recommendation from members of the city’s Planning Commission. Meanwhile, officials received an offer for a portion of the land to potentially become the future home of the city’s police department. During its meeting Monday, council chose not to take any action on an ordinance regarding the current land use of the former Jimmy Carey Stadium property. The site currently is zoned M-2, which includes uses in heavy industrial, light industrial and commercial.

COVID-19 precautions ignored as Opening Day crowds fill The Banks

Large crowds packed into The Banks to celebrate Opening Day on Thursday. For the most part, COVID-19 safety measures were ignored as people stood shoulder to shoulder without wearing masks.  Reds fans braved the cold temperatures and gathered at East Freedom Way, filling the roadways from Marian Spencer Way to Joe Nuxhall Way. Surrounding bars and restaurants saw long lines that stretched the entire width of the street.  Ahead of Opening Day, officials outlined guidelines for visitors to ensure COVID-19 safety precautions were being followed including having social-distancing signage around The Banks.   White circles were drawn on the Sing Cincinnati lawn area and elsewhere to indicate the need for social distancing but the crowds on Thursday largely ignored those markers.
