From the outside it would be easy not to give it another glance. Built on top of a container lying among the sprawl of shacks that make up the settlement in Freedom Way, Joe Slovo in Cape Town, it looks like just another corrugated metal home. But stepping into Fernando Mucavele’s abode is like entering a high-end boutique hotel.
There’s a recessed ceiling, lit by carefully concealed LED lights that with a flick of the remote control cast a colourful glow on the queen-size bed. Four gleaming white pillars frame the bed that’s tastefully decorated with scatter cushions arranged on the pristine bed linen, complete with meticulously rolled towels.
