France appoints alumni ambassadors to promote educational ties in India

DELHI: The French embassy in Delhi launched an alumni ambassadorship programme to promote better people-to-people ties between India and France during the visit of Jean-Yves Le Drian, minister for Europe and foreign affairs of France, to India earlier this week. Fifteen alumni ambassadors were inducted into the programme for 2021-2023 during an investiture ceremony in the capital city on Tuesday.
France has set a target of having 20,000 Indian students studying in institutions of higher education across the country by 2025, Minister Le Drian said at the programme. In 2019, there were 10,000 Indian students studying in France, according to a French embassy spokesperson.

The French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, who arrived in New Delhi on April 13 for a four-day official visit, said that the country has set a target of having 20,000 students in France by 2025 and they would work for making it possible. Speaking at an event at the French Embassy where he appointed 15 Alumni Ambassadors of Higher Education in France, he assured that these students will receive support during their stay in France.
People aware of the development told ET that while French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian will help in preparing Prime Minister Narendra Modi s possible visit to Paris in the second week of May. The visit by Maldives foreign minister will be key to maintaining stability in the Indian Ocean region amid Chinas growing interests and alleged spread of narco-terrorism in the area.
