The Conservative Partys annual conference starts today in birmingham. The event is a chance for The Partys four leadership candidates to make an impression, with each of them due to give a speech on wednesday. Speaking to Laura Kuenssberg this morning, leadership hopeful Robert Jenrick explained why he is the man to turn around the fortunes of the Conservative Party after losing out to labour in the general election. In the article that i wrote in the hours after the election, then i came on your show that weekend, i said that we failed to deliver on the economy, on the nhs and our borders. So there are multiple failures that we need to acknowledge as a party, whilst obviously defending the things we got right in government, and then weve got to listen to the public and set out serious answers to those challenges. Ive spent the last few months thinking very deeply about how we do that, and i dont want to waste the next five years debating those things. Thats a recipe for more infightin
The blast. We can go to Beirut And Anna foster. We were speaking to our colleague who was saying the news has been reported on iranians media. That is right. It is an important moment. What i think will be a moment when you see a collective outpouring of grief in southern suburbs of beirut and the south of the country and the south of the Country And Bekaa valley is when we have the funeral. I have no indication when it will happen. It will happen reasonably quickly because these things always do. Perhaps tomorrow. That will be a big moment. If you look back to just over a week ago when we had the attacks with pagers and walkie talkies. People gathered at funerals and a second wave of attacks came then so when people go to a funeral they will remember what happened a week ago and be nervous. If you support hezbollah in the stronghold areas, they will want to be part of their collective grieving process. That is something that i think well have a real impact on the streets of beirut and
In beirut right now. Again, we have had strikes here through the day, and smoke once again rising on the skyline of the lebanese capital. The prime minister of this country, the Acting Prime Minister has called again for a diplomatic solution to the conflict and he warns that up to A Million people here in lebanon could be displaced by the ongoing violence. The streets of dahieh, this is the Beating Heart of hezbollah in beirut, now looking like a ghost town. Thousands have left, many more are still trying to leave. Driving through dahieh this morning, we saw cars packed with mattresses and bags. Some people seemed to be leaving on foot. Israeli Air Strikes destroyed this building yesterday. The smell of the explosives was still hanging in the air and we could hear the sound of drones flying overhead. Israel says it will continue to target hezbollah, even after killing the groups leader, Hassan Nasrallah. Dahieh is no longer safe. There is a tense and anxious wait in lebanon following

Thats a recipe for more infighting and for further loss of public trust. I want to use this Leadership Contest for us to settle those things and have a clear plan as to how we take our party and our country forward, and i have that in particular on immigration. Competing with robertjenrick for the
And is now the worlds fourth largest economy. It had been the second largest until china overtook it in 2010. Japan has also been battling a deflationary spiral for a generation, but that ended late last year. Mariko oi has been following the story for us from our asia business hub. What more can you tell us about ishibas economic manifesto . Well, his economic policies are still rather unclear. He has been criticised during the Election Campaign for lacking a clear economic vision. One thing we do know is that he was quite critical of the shinzo abe, who implemented investor friendly policies. During the Press Conference he held this evening he talked about how investors may have benefited, but not ordinary consumers, so we may see some changes there.
