The Conservative Partys annual conference starts today in birmingham. The event is a chance for The Partys four leadership candidates to make an impression, with each of them due to give a speech on wednesday. Speaking to Laura Kuenssberg this morning, leadership hopeful Robert Jenrick explained why he is the man to turn around the fortunes of the Conservative Party after losing out to labour in the general election. In the article that i wrote in the hours after the election, then i came on your show that weekend, i said that we failed to deliver on the economy, on the nhs and our borders. So there are multiple failures that we need to acknowledge as a party, whilst obviously defending the things we got right in government, and then weve got to listen to the public and set out serious answers to those challenges. Ive spent the last few months thinking very deeply about how we do that, and i dont want to waste the next five years debating those things. Thats a recipe for more infighting and for further loss of public trust. I want to use this Leadership Contest for us to settle those things and have a clear plan as to how we take our party and our country forward, and i have that in particular on immigration. Competing with robertjenrick for the leadership of the conservatives in Kemi Badenoch with a Campaign Focus of immigration and integration, saying not all cultures are equally valid when it comes to deciding who should be allowed into the uk. Im saying that if we want to have a well integrated society, we need to make sure that we have a shared culture and a shared identity. This is a multi ethnic society. Thats obvious. Im a black woman sitting here talking to you. But there is a difference between being multi ethnic and being multicultural. I grew up in a place that was multicultural, and yet everybody looked the same. Conflict arises when you emphasise difference. We need to emphasise the things that we share. Being british, british values, the things that we talked about freedom, equal rights, personal responsibility, not discriminating people because of their sexual orientation. There are some cultures that do that. I dont think that a culture that thinks gay people should be stoned is as valid as ours. This is not a controversial thing to say. Lets go live to birmingham and talk to our political correspondent, hannah miller. Is Kemi Badenoch spelling out exactly who she is talking about there, hannah . 50. Exactly who she is talking about there, hannah . So, Kemi Badenoch about there, hannah . So, Kemi Badenoch has about there, hannah . So, Kemi Badenoch has focused about there, hannah . So, Kemi Badenoch has focused very about there, hannah . So, kemi| badenoch has focused very much on principles, whereas you heard robertjenrick theyre talking specifically more about how he would have plans and what they would mean in practice. She said that she was not talking about all muslims in the comments that she was making. She said that there are many muslims who love the country, that was the group was brought up in herself when asked about it and said she did not want to get drawn into that kind of language, but she talked about people who might open the door and then the women might say that Cant Speak because the husband needs to do the talking on their part. She said that was unacceptable in british society. So she is saying things that are controversial, perhaps, that some people might feel uncomfortable about, but she is using her background and highlighting her background as someone who was born in the uk, but then grew up in nigeria and came back to the uk when she was 16. And using that history that she has personally to say things that she believes, she is typically straight talking. What is very unclear is what exactly these things she is saying would mean in practice. Its all very well saying everyone needs to sign up to british values and she said that governments have a Response Ability to make sure that people coming into the country love the country and sign up to the values, but how exactly you do that i think its something that we have not heard from her at all. We its something that we have not heard from her at all. Heard from her at all. We have seen positioning heard from her at all. We have seen positioning from heard from her at all. We have seen positioning from all heard from her at all. We have seen positioning from all fourl seen positioning from all four candidates, aims not only at the mps but at the tory membership and it is up to the mps to put through the final two candidates. All four will strut their stuff as it were this week, and two will remain. There has been some speculation, for example, about whether there will be some sort of deal to keep Kemi Badenoch out. She is seen to be popular with The Party membership. Yes. With The Party membership. Yes, Kemi Badenoch with The Party membership. Yes, Kemi Badenoch is with The Party membership. Yes, Kemi Badenoch is widely Kemi Badenoch is widely regarded as the favourite among The Party membership, the view being that if she makes it into the final two, she is perhaps the final two, she is perhaps the most likely to win. That, of course, means that if you are any of the other three it is in your interest to make sure that she is not on the ballot paper. It is Robert Jenrick who is out front in terms of the number of mps who have so far voted for him. Kemi badenoch second, and James Cleverly behind. There is clearly going to be plotting going on here at this conference behind closed doors, winks and nudges as well as the very public Question And Answer sessions and the speeches that we will be seeing. But what impact that all has on mps who will be making that decision about who goes into the final two, we wont know that for a couple of weeks yet. Obviously it is difficult couple of weeks yet. Obviously it is difficult in couple of weeks yet. Obviously it is difficult in opposition it is difficult in opposition often to get attention, so this part of this about all of them, you know, doing what they can to stand out . Is that part of why we are seeing this quite controversial position from some of the candidates . Obviously, reform is also on the shoulder. I obviously, reform is also on the shoulder. Obviously, reform is also on the shoulder. I think The Party is to some the shoulder. I think The Party is to some extent the shoulder. I think The Party is to some extent having the shoulder. I think The Party is to some extent having an i is to some extent having an internal debate with itself at the moment about why exactly they lost, and what exactly they lost, and what exactly they need to do about it in order to win back voters. We have James Cleverly, another candidate this morning, talking about sorting out the squabbling and the bickering that there was within government being important before they start setting out any policies, because his belief is that people had stopped listening because there was so much squabbling going on. So among the candidates, there are perhaps different views about what exactly the process needs to be to turn around their fortunes, process needs to be to turn around theirfortunes, but process needs to be to turn around their fortunes, but the extent to which it is at this point not so much about grabbing public attention in some ways, and more about setting the direction of The Party and the speed with which they can turn around their electoral prospects. Hannah miller, thank electoral prospects. Hannah miller, thank you. An Nhs Surgeon who has volunteered for over 50 humanitarian missions worldwide has told the bbc that his recent visit to gaza was the worst situation hes ever encountered. Dr Ammar Darwish said that he saw Horrors Unparallelled to anywhere else he d worked in. He recorded a Video Diary for the bbc to show what life is like there. Been operating since yesterday, all the way through the evening and all the way to the night. Its 8 40 this morning, and weve been operating on a young lady who is three months pregnant and had multiple Shrapnel Injuries to the abdomen, causing multiple injuries inside. Were overwhelmed with the amount of injuries that are coming through. Were running out of supplies and without these supplies, unfortunately, a lot of patients will die and a lot of injured civilians, including children and women, will be suffering from that. Just about a couple of hours ago, um, a bomb was dropped in front of the hospitalfrom a drone, which caused more casualties to come through. Its extremely difficult situation to operate in, especially when we had no electricity all day to day until this evening. And, er, it was really difficult to run a theatre and run the emergency department, with a small generator that the hospital uses. Electricity is back on now, but we dont know for how long. And the night is still young. Wevejust had unconfirmed news that the other hospital thats next to the area next to us had to evacuate. This means that our hospital is the last Standing Hospital here that can accept, or able to deal with mass casualties and major trauma injuries. Weve just seen a 15 year old who had his house bombed and came with grade 4 or 5 liver injury, and its really difficult to do anything for him. Were going to keep a close eye on him. Unfortunately, if he deteriorates, were going to take him for an operation which he might not survive. Its been quite an exhausting and intense tenth day and the night is still early. We are going to take you to a News Conference now by the lebanese pro minister. Translation 1100 translation 11oo Ambulance Cars have moved since tuesday, last tuesday. We are doing this within our own capacity, our abilities. I would like to thank everybody who has been providing efforts. We talked to some and in the next couple of days we have invited all the members, all the specialists and we will see what they need so we can provide it. We have received some donations and we are trying to facilitate the aid. We have directed and sent instructions to the Customs Manager responsible for Customs And Excise so that they will facilitate this. Also in the morning tomorrow, for those who will donate and will help, we try to facilitate between the state and all the parties who are donating, and of course this needs to be followed by lebanon. We have got a body which will monitor in this emergency situation. We have some communications so that we can get with some. We can then allocate some of the spending. The cabinet is looking into this. We have discussed security within the cabinet. The lebanese Army And Security forces are all there and the security around displaced places and we are taking some procedures. Those who are in the streets, and they are mostly non lebanese who have some procedures towards them, and there were some attacks on some private properties and we want to provide protection. We want to protect the consumer in this situation and they are increasing the prices. The Ministry Of Economy is actually monitoring this and following up monitoring this and following up with any of these who make extortionate prices. We have public facilities looking after the safety of the airport and the seaport, and lastly we are in a situation, it is not an easy one, and we are collaborating with each other. Cooperating with each other. Cooperating with each other. This is a situation and we are following this matter and i hope that things will end. Qatar and egypt are trying to do some diplomatic work and of course we are looking at the diplomatic role. In the Security Council, no matter what happened in the war, we want to spare blood. The Lebanese Army is there. Some of the Food Aid is going to the Lebanese Army that has been hit. We appreciate the efforts of the country. With regards to the ceasefire for 21 days, that will be implemented. I have welcomed it and we would like it to be implemented. Lebanon is still within the international community. Would israel come to a ceasefire . Would israel come to a ceasefire . , i , i, ceasefire . The logic says that we have international ceasefire . The logic says that we have international law,. Ceasefire . The logic says that| we have international law, but what the israeli party will do, we hope that they will do so. You talked about the displaced on the streets. With regards to those displaced on the streets, if they want to move to syria they have to pay money. If that is the case. It is complicated to spend that money for them. There are many hindrances. Because of some of the lords, what would happen if we look into that, because there is some eruption and we are trying to take that into consideration with our monitoring corruption. With our following up with the mayors, there will be some true observation. We cantjust observation. We cant just spend observation. We cantjust spend without monitoring this situation. We want to meet with the mayors. We can look into this. What we are saying is a ceasefire on all orders, even in gaza. If the ceasefire we have been talking about for seven or eight months, it would be a ceasefire in gaza and a ceasefire in Southern Lebanon so that we can apply 1701 solution and perhaps have all hostages returned. We are trying to separate the lebanese. The Military Operations are finished. That is the lebanese Prime Ministerjust Ending A News Conference which we heard most of but we did miss the beginning because we were waiting for a translation. I think he set up to 1 Million people could be displaced as a result of what has happened, pushing very much for a diplomatic resolution. He said he was appreciating the efforts of Qatar And Egypt in this, and also said, he talked about whether some people wanted to go to syria, that they would have to pay money in order to do that. A lot of refugees are already displaced within the lebanese population, and even more now, of course, having moved in particularfrom the south. The lebanese Prime Minister theyre talking about wanting to try to protect people as much as possible, and saying that up to A Million people could be displaced. We have also been hearing today that ngo such as the World Food Programme are trying to help and they have launched an Emergency Operation in lebanon to distribute aid for up to A Million people in the region. We will keep you updated on that. Voting is taking place in austria in a general election that could see the far right Freedom Party win the most seats for the first time. The party crashed out of a Coalition Government with the conservative Peoples Party five years ago because of a corruption scandal. The campaign was dominated by Voter Concerns over economic worries and immigration. Our correspondent in Austria Bethany Bell has more on this. Voting has been underway for a few hours now, since the early hours of this morning. Im outside a Polling Station here in vienna. Theres been a steady stream of people coming to cast their votes. The Polling Stations are going to be open today till around 5 00 local time, and then we should get the first projected results shortly after that. But also theres been a Record Number of postal ballots issued this year. So then that could mean that we dont get a final result until next week. One of the interesting things thats also been a Theory Theme of this Election Campaign is notjust the questions about the economy, about migration, about austrias neutral status, but also about the fact that austria is a country of about 9 Million people, 6. 3 million people are 16 or over are eligible to vote, but there are 1. 5 million long term residents of austria who dont have austrian citizenships, who dont have the right to vote. And that has been also one of the issues discussed in this Election Campaign. And its because of austrias very restrictive citizenship laws. Just to update you, one line from the middle east, the Israel Defense forces have said that they killed a senior Hezbollah Official in strikes carried out on lebanon on saturday. There has been no comment as yet from hezbollah on that. The idf said he was close to the top of hezbollah. We have just been hearing also a News Conference from the lebanese Prime Minister, talking about the diplomatic push going on and we have also heard from lebanon s Information Commissioner saying diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire in israel are still under way with the Prime Minister saying up to A Million people potentially displaced within lebanon, a country that is already home to many other refugees within its population, people of course struggling if they have had to move out of their home in the south. The israelis are saying that their campaign must go on for now, and there is no sign of a ceasefire at all as yet. These are the shots, as you can see, from beirut. There is a 21 Day Proposal put forward by the us and others and so far that is still being worked on. This is still being worked on. This is bbc news. Hello. Certain areas certainly dont need it at the moment, but theres more rain in the forecast over the next few days, accompanied by some strong winds as well. Could be quite a torrid start to the week for one or two, staying on the Cool Side as well. But as we go through the middle part of the week and beyond, things should brighten up. So thats your week in a nutshell. Todays wet and windy weather is from this area of low pressure, which was pushing in as we went into the start of the day. Strengthening winds with gales now across the coast of wales and the southwest winds picking up two further in northern ireland, outbreaks of rain starting to develop a bit more widely in these areas as we go through the afternoon, becoming heavy and more persistent to the west of wales and across devon and cornwall. Away from that, though, most places will stay dry. A bit of brightness around, especially in scotland, a fair bit of cloud with that strengthening south easterly wind, so after a chilly start, it wont feel particularly warm this afternoon. 13 to 15 the highs. Lets focus on the rain, though, for the evening if youre on the move. Occasional rain in northern ireland, but some longer spells of heavier rain in wales and the south west, gradually starting to work its way in and turning wetter too. Across other parts of england. The most persistent rain though, will be through the night from the southwest, drifting into South Wales and across parts of central southern england. The gusts of wind 50 60 miles an hour, the strongest around the English Channel coast. Further north, drier, a little bit clearer, but not as cold as recent nights as that wind continues to freshen. So heres the chart for monday. Area of low pressure becomes fairly slow moving and almost stalls across parts of eastern england. It does mean that the persistent rain then pushes in towards parts of East Anglia for a time, but mainly parts of northern england, yorkshire, lincolnshire, East Midlands as well down into the northwest and some rain out in the far west as well, where those Rainfall Totals Tot up across parts of yorkshire, lincolnshire and the North East midlands, we could have some issues. Further south, something a bit brighter developing and a little bit milder drier. Low pressure still hangs around into tuesdayjust offshore, bringing in some strong and cool winds around those English Channel coast. And we could see further outbreaks of rain work their way down through eastern counties, but come further westwards and northwards much brighter. Some spells of hazy sunshine. Many places will stay dry still on the Cool Side though, especially in that wind. But the rain eventually clears away from the southeast during the day on wednesday, most places become dry and bright, but some overnight Frost And Fog to see the week out.
