The Wheeling Police Department will be closely monitoring traffic flow along the I-70 Bridges Project eastbound local detour today, which includes this intersection at 10th and Main Street in downtown Wheeling.
WHEELING By mid-morning today, motorists heading east on Interstate 70 no longer will have a straight shot past town.
The eastbound section of the Fulton Bridge is scheduled to close between 9-10 a.m. today, according to West Virginia Division of Highway Officials. That way, drivers headed to work early today can get there before the section shuts down.
After that, though, drivers will need alternate routes, and the Wheeling Police Department will be monitoring traffic flow throughout the area. The closures are part of the second phase of the I-70 Bridges Project.

WHEELING, W.Va. Motorists in the Wheeling area might be experiencing Déjà vu on Monday and for the next nine months.
The second phase of the $214-million bridge rehabilitation project on Interstate-70 through Ohio County began at 10:30 a.m. Monday as I-70 eastbound was closed by Swank Construction from Exit 1B, the U.S. 250/W.Va. Rt. 2-16th Street exit, to Exit 2A, the Oglebay Park exit.
The first phase of the project, which featured a demolition of the Fulton Bridge, began nearly one year ago to the date but featured the closure of the westbound lanes in that exact area. As the first phase lasted until November, West Virginia Division of Highway (DOH) officials and those with the Wheeling Police Department (WPD) are expecting the same timeline for much of 2021 with a November completion for phase two.
The second phase of the Interstate 70 Bridges project is officially underway.
At 10:30 a.m. Monday, crews with Swank Construction set up barrels outside the Wheeling Tunnel heading east on I-70 that forces all traffic to exit onto W.Va. 2 south. The ramp onto I-70 from W.Va. 2 north also was closed.
The closures will facilitate the total replacement of the Fulton Bridge’s eastbound lanes. The work is scheduled to last until November.
Motorists traveling east on I-70 and wanting to get to Wheeling Hospital can exit at Exit 1A off the Fort Henry Bridge and follow the detour, which goes along Main Street to 10th Street, onto Market Street and then up Wheeling Hill to National Road. The detour then goes to Mount de Chantal Road where travelers can get back on to I-70 east.

WHEELING Motorists should expect to see Swank Construction crews out working once again on the $215 million I-70 Bridges Project in Ohio County by the end of January, according to West Virginia Division of Highways Area Engineer Mike Witherow. That return comes after a several-week break over the holidays.
The nearly three-year highway project is entering its “second phase” following the nine-month closure and reopening of the westbound Fulton Bridges section of the highway in 2020. Swank crews are expected to begin working again over the coming weeks in the numerous “phase construction” areas throughout the project, according to Witherow.
