shooting. and the platinum jubilee celebrations in the u.k. minus the guest of honor. announcer: live from cnn center, this is cnn newsroom with michael holmes. welcome, everyone. the war in eastern ukraine now being described as a grinding slog with neither side appearing to make any significant gains in recent days. ukraine concedes russian troops have made some modest in roads in and around the key city of severodonetsk but were pushed back from nearby towns. britain s defense ministry says it expects russians will control all of the luhansk region within two weeks. the international red cross said the scale of destruction defies comprehension. but ukraine claims its forces have progressed into the southern kherson region. as the conflict surpassed 100 days ukraine s president, volodymyr zelenskyy, remained confident of the outcome. translator: we have been dedefending ukraine for 100 days. victory shall be ours. glory to ukraine. now, the human toll in ukraine
too late now to make those kinds of arrangements. but nonetheless it will still be impactful throughout the day on tis as it gathers strength. and next 24 hours, we ll see that by wednesday morning, programs we will be a category 3. it had been a little bit later in the day. but we think perhaps landfall will be about midday on wednesday. maybe around the big bend area there. which is very sparsely populated. a lot of wildlife management areas, a lot of recreational activity that would take place there. there are still communities, but the big populations are right along the west coast. this is kind of a forecast radar. you see what it is doing here? now throwing that moisture in across southern sections of georgia even up towards atlanta, picking up some rainfall. and across midlands of south carolina and coastal sections
when it comes to wind and damage in a big city, tallahassee, you are in the way. so many big trees. so many big things between you and st. marks. st. marks is going to get a significant tidal surge, likely 12 to 15 feet in downtown st. marks. people there just need to be out. but for you, tallahassee, even a 90-mile-per-hour wind which is in the forecast will bring down so many power lines and so many trees that that s going to be a terrible place to be. if you don t have to be there, get away and let this thing this is going to be a week or two before we put all these power lines back up. here s the forecast radar. you see all of these storms coming on shore here. every one of those could spin into a small tornado. and then across parts of georgia into the carolinas with heavy rain. jim, i don t know if you know this. but back before about 2000 more people died because of storm surge per storm than now. right now more people die because of flash flooding
storm system that brought several tornadoes but more or less a wind threat across the eastern half of the country. today, this is what we re really concerned with. we have 120 million americans under the threat of severe weather. so d.c., once again, philadelphia, baltimore, new york city all the way to atlanta. damaging winds, very large hail, can t rule out a tornado. but let s focus in on that wind threat. the storm prediction center highlighted the mid atlantic as our greatest threat. this is a 45% likelihood anywhere within the particular location, you could pick a dot. within 25 mile radius you would have a wind damage event taking place within the next 12 hours. so that is what we re focussing in on. d.c., all the way to philadelphia. look at these storms just erupt on our forecast radar. this is really that time frame when you re driving home this evening. 4 to 6:00 p.m. and then again the chance of tornadoes definitely in the pipeline here. we look towards the southeast as our
clouds. the cg, the cloud-to-ground lightning, that s the rolling thunder that you hear or sees a the lightning goes across the sky. these are actual bolts making it to the ground. the yellow is severe thunderstorm watches in effect until 8:00 and some until 10:00. they may get extended. this weather is moving across to the eastern shore and across parts of north carolina and could see strong weather and thunder and lightning across parts of the deep south. now, for tomorrow if you re outside, this is the area that will see the most and biggest area of severe weather, even though there will be thunder and lightning all across the deep south. my first stop on this forecast radar, this is what our model things is going to happen. it s not going to be perfect. computers aren t perfect. showers start to pop up 2:00, 3
