carlos suarez. just for people to be clear, that s an access point to pine island, right? business owners and residents are getting to go back and see firsthand the damage? reporter: that is exactly right, poppy. there are two things happening now across southwest florida. first, the folks who live on san able island, this morning for the very first time, the folks who live there get their first opportunity to go back home since that storm hit. emergency official are being strict with how folks can get back out. you have to do it by private boat, you have to have a special pass. residents are being told you can only take one guest. they re going to allow the folks to be there for a few hours, then they have to come back. state official are trying to reconstruction that causeway that was wiped out. here in matlacha, eastbound taking to boats to get to pine island, a barrier island. they just have been showing up here at matlacha, and boat captains are saying if you need a ri
broken and we thought we d find water. we ve lived here for seven years. it s paradise. we felt we would come back and find everything gone. i mean, we just have to fix up our yard. our neighbors, that house over there, we know all these people. among the priorities, governor desantis says are the temporary repairs on key bridges to sanibel, pine island. those have been closed off since the storm. just hours ago he announced the road to pine island will open today. that s a day sooner than expected. cnn s boris sanchez and kaitlan collins are in the hardest-hit county, lee county. boris, what s the latest? reporter: alison and victor, a big moment for residents of sanibel and pine island. very emotional moments as they get back to areas previously cut off by hurricane ian. we heard from some residents of sanibel. many don t know what they re going back to. that community decimated by hurricane ian and its nearly category 5 storm force winds. governor desantis vowing he
miles per hour, gusting up around 60 miles per hour. with this storm, you have tropical storm watches in effect for jamaica and hurricane watches for cayman islands. that s because looking at the frarsz we anticipate that this storm will become a category 1 storm maybe even as high as a category 2 storm as it s crossing over the cayman islands. it is then expected to intensify further as it makes its way up towards cuba and crosses into the eastern portion of the gulf of mexico. at that point, perhaps, it could get into that major hurricane strength. here s the thing, though. a lot of that has to do with sea surface temperatures that are in the mid and upper 80s for the area in which it s expected to travel through. that sea surface temperature is a big fuel for these storms. it s not just at the surface but going down tens of feet, talking about the ocean heat content, even down there that water is warm, and that s what these storms need to strengthen and intensify as they c
