Funding for new equipment and reduced meeting quorum approved at Fire District Meeting

Photos by: Madison Czopek Selectman Alan Slavin proposed a zero quorum for future Wareham Fire District meetings. In stark contrast with the lengthy and controversial Special Town Meeting on April 10, voters at the Wareham Fire District’s annual meeting approved nearly everything on the docket without much discussion or any objection during a speedy 40-minute meeting Monday, April 12. Despite the chilly, overcast evening, 61 voters gathered at 6 p.m. for the drive-in style district meeting, which was held in the Wareham High School parking lot.

Train conductor shot with pellet gun

Apr 12, 2021 Late on Monday morning, the conductor on a train traveling on the tracks near Pierceville Road in West Wareham was hit by a shot from a pellet gun. Police Chief John Walcek said that it may have been an accident and that the train employee received a minor injury. Wareham Police, Plymouth County K-9s and State Police K-9s searched the area and spoke to people nearby. The incident is under investigation by the Wareham Police. No charges have yet been filed. Lofgren fits a student with a helmet. Wareham’s elementary students made the most of their first week back in school full-time, five days a week. On Monday, April 5, firefighter Dana Lofgren from the Wareham Fire Department visited John W. Decas Elementary School to talk with students about bicycle safety, according to a post on the department’s Facebook page. Lofgren brought multiple helmet types with him ones worn both at work while on duty and off duty.

Marion Fire Department to receive state grant

Apr 3, 2021 MARION The Marion Fire Department will be among the departments to receive $75,897.82 through the Fiscal Year 2021 Firefighter Safety Equipment Grant Program. State Sen. Marc Pacheco announced the grants on April 2, which will be split among Marion, Wareham, Raynham Berkley, Carver and Dighton.  “I am very pleased that local fire departments in Berkley, Carver, Dighton, Marion, Raynham, and Wareham will be receiving over $75,000 to help keep firefighters safe in the line of duty,” Pacheco said. “During the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and beyond, firefighters and first responders have worked incredibly hard to help protect the residents of the local communities I represent. The critical resources awarded today will help do the same for local firefighters and emergency personnel by providing them with safer, more effective equipment in the line of duty.”
