While history always reverberates in present, the current envoy to India from Bhutan, Maj Gen Vetsop Namgyel, recalled a very interesting personal anecdote of his meeting with Bangladesh s father of the nation, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The meeting happened when the envoy was aide de camp during the then King of Bhutan Jigme Singye Wangchuck s Bangladesh visit in 1974.
He said, After establishing diplomatic relations, my king, the father of the present king, was invited for a state visit in winter of 1974 and I was the aide de camp and I had the opportunity of accompanying him.
This day is marked as the Martyr’s Day to honour Bapu. Gandhiji will always be remembered for using non-violence to unite the Indians for freedom struggle. He was shot dead on this day in 1948 by Nathuram Godse. His death anniversary is observed as Martyrs' Day.

Mahatma Gandhi, the unofficial Father of the Nation , was assassinated on January 30, 1948 at the age of 78 years by Nathuram Godse. Today we are remembering this great leader on his 73rd death anniversary. India marks the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, as Martyrs Day or Shaheed Divas every year on January 30. It is also observed to pay homage to the freedom fighters who laid their lives for the country s independence.
Born as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi on October 2, 1869 in Gujarat s Porbandar, Mahatma Gandhi received his higher education in England before returning back to India and leading the freedom struggle against the British rule. He introduced ahimsa or non-violence to India and took on the mighty British with the non-violent protests.
Govt officials vow to uphold dignity of Bangabandhu

BCS cadres under the banner of Government Officials Forum hold a rally at Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC) in the capital on Saturday, protesting the vandalism of Bangabandhu’s sculpture. SUN PHOTO
Government officials on Saturday pledged not to allow any kind of insult and disrespect towards Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Officials of all BCS cadres made this pledge through programmes across the country, including in Dhaka. Non-cadre officials were also present at the rally.
The rally was held at Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC) in the capital’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar under the banner of Government Officials’ Forum.
