Were we bewitched by the WandaVision finale?

I Love Lucy and Dick Van Dyke Show marathons on Nick At Nite, I was not among those itching for WandaVision to move past the spectacular channeling of classic TV. That said, I still pored over every weighted phrase and possible hint of what was to come. The world Wanda created was fascinating, and the fact that she had no idea how she did it made for riveting storytelling inside Westview, that is. I enjoy Josh Stamberg, but he was in a different show. Where the world of Westview’s sitcom imitations was exciting and new, Hayward’s mission felt like a stale rerun: setting the stage for Vision’s revival seemed somewhat unnecessary, and Monica Rambeau could’ve gotten her superhero origin story without a clichéd boss in the way. (I’d also add Monica’s long-touted mystery guest being a no-name agent to the manipulations list Sam started with Fake Pietro.)

Speaking to Black Girl Nerds, Paul Bettany (aka Vision) told them the following: There s stuff that I can t talk to you about, where I get to work with an actor that s going to be a surprise for everybody. I get to work with an actor that I ve been wanting to work with forever, who is just unbelievable. We have some real fireworks together. And that actor turned out to be. Paul Bettany. Yep, if you ve seen the finale, then you already know Bettany appears as both OG Vision and new White Vision, and they share a number of scenes together. We d almost be mad, except this is actually a pretty funny troll, so we can t help but laugh.

WandaVision finale did what it had to do — not what we wanted it to do

While the Disney Plus series is from the powerful production house of Marvel Studios, it also proved to be a deliciously strange, surprisingly poignant reflection on grief, family and community. Watching Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) wind her way through decades of sitcom history, layers of her own trauma, and an increasingly tragic love story with her considerate (and synthetic) counterpart Vision (Paul Bettany) became a weekly event that united viewers in a pressing need to know what on earth was going to happen next.
