Fairbanks Four Case Hearing

There was a hearing this morning (Weds) in the Fairbanks 4 federal civil rights case against the City of Fairbanks. The Native men who came to be known as the Fairbanks Four: George Freese, Marvin Roberts, Kevin Pease and Eugene Vent were convicted and imprisoned for the 1997 beating death of 15 year old John Hartman on a city street, but evidence presented during a 2015 hearing pointed to another group of local young men actually being responsible for the crime. The new evidence led to a settlement agreement, now at issue as the Fairbanks Four sue the city for civil rights violations. KUAC’s Dan Bross reports.

1:42 In what has become known as the “Fairbanks Four,” the men were convicted of the murder of John Hartman, who was found beaten on a Fairbanks street corner in 1997. He died in the hospital two days later. George Frese (freeze), Kevin Pease (peez) Marvin Roberts and Eugene Vent were convicted of murder, and spent 18 years in prison. The evidence of their case was re-examined in a five-week-long hearing in 2015, which included evidence that other people may have beaten Hartman. Their convictions were vacated. Contract attorney for the City of Fairbanks, Matthew Singer, says they agreed not to sue the City or state as part of an agreement for their release.

Court rejects Fairbanks Four case

WASHINGTON (AP) â Four men who say they were illegally imprisoned for nearly two decades for the murder of a teenager in Alaska will have their lawsuit go forward after the U.S. Supreme Court declined to get involved in the case. The high court turned away the case Monday. As is typical, the justices did not comment in rejecting the case. That leaves in place a decision by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. In January of last year the appeals court overturned a lower court ruling that dismissed a lawsuit by the Fairbanks Four against the city of Fairbanks.
