City wants reimbursement, says Fairbanks Four violated contract

The city of Fairbanks is accusing the Fairbanks Four — Marvin Roberts, Kevin Pease, Eugene Vent and George Frese — of breach of contract and is seeking reimbursement for its legal defense after the men accused the city and four police officers of civil rights violations, malicious prosecution and wrongful imprisonment. Roberts, Pease, Vent and Frese say they were wrongfully accused and convicted of murder and are suing for damages, but the city wants the U.S. District Court to enforce a 2015 agreement in which the Fairbanks Four, after collectively serving more than 70 years in prison, waived their rights to seek damages in exchange for their freedom.

Alaska s wheels of justice need tending to, as well as the nation s

As the nation and the world waited on Tuesday for a verdict in the trial of Derek Chauvin, the former officer charged with murder in George Floyd s death, awareness is higher than ever about racial inequities in the nation s justice system. While the guilty verdicts may be seen as a win for equality and a step forward for the nation, there is still much work to be done. Each week, new cases of apparent misuse of power by authorities entrusted to protect all citizens in the nation emerge. Far too many of them involve members of minority populations. A little closer to home, many Alaskans know this pain all too well. This week, a Bethel woman finally saw action 110 days after she reported she was sexually assaulted. She said it took Bethel police 34 days to pick up her sexual assault kit, and another two months to arrest the alleged rapist.

Fairbanks Four Case Hearing

There was a hearing this morning (Weds) in the Fairbanks 4 federal civil rights case against the City of Fairbanks. The Native men who came to be known as the Fairbanks Four: George Freese, Marvin Roberts, Kevin Pease and Eugene Vent were convicted and imprisoned for the 1997 beating death of 15 year old John Hartman on a city street, but evidence presented during a 2015 hearing pointed to another group of local young men actually being responsible for the crime. The new evidence led to a settlement agreement, now at issue as the Fairbanks Four sue the city for civil rights violations. KUAC’s Dan Bross reports.
