while some parts of the country are dealing with the remnants of isaac, here sunshine. this is thursday, august 30th, 2012. good morning, everybody. i m tony perkins. i m allison seymour. and we continue to track tropical storm isaac as it slowly moves in bringing heavy rains and strong winds. in louisiana, thousands of people are being evacuated from saint john the baptist parish because of major flooding. the national guard has been working with sheriff s deputies to rescue people who may be stranded in their homes. in nearby plaquemines parish, officials plan to intentionally puncture a floodwall to relieve growing pressure on one levee. meanwhile, in mississippi several national guard rescues were made. isaac spawned one tornado that destroyed several buildings and knocked down power lines. president obama has signed a disaster declaration for louisiana and mississippi. it speeds up federal aid and recovery efforts. about three-quarters of a million people are without
conducting active search and rescue missions, national guard working with local officials including sheriff s deputies, private citizens and others have reported at least 35 people have been rescued. at least two people have been killed in the storm. let s go to sue palka for the latest update from the national hurricane center. the latest update just came out. it s now moving north west at 6, but the national hurricane center thinks it will begin to pick up a little speed tomorrow and start moving faster through louisiana, but tonight it s still crawling and you can see it here on radar, very heavy rain from new orleans east with strong feeder bands coming right off the gulf of mexico into mississippi and alabama. here s the latest track. it puts it 70 miles west of new orleans and about 15 miles south of baton rouge. it didn t lose any strength in terms of the wind speed with it, still at 60 miles an hour. the worst of the window is still in the gulf of mexico, but it s
block of fairfax boulevard. this is video from the scene that just came into our newsroom. police are looking for the driver who they say did not stop. also this morning, police are trying to identify a would-be robber killed in a bizarre holdup when his plan literally backfired. a cab picked up a man at the largo station and drove him to bowie. the man then demanded money from the cabbie, then started to douse the cabbie with a flammable liquid. when he went to light that liquid, he set himself on fire. other cab drivers say there is often danger at picking up riders at metro stations. sometimes they just come and get in the cab. we don t know the sbengs. that s why we make the presence of police here all the time. the cab driver escaped with only minor injuries. the rob are was killed. police identified the prince george s county man who died in a freak accident just days after becoming a new dad. authorities say that the 31-year-old of green belt maryland was drivi
28-year-old floyd corkin of herndon, was taken away in handcuffs. the suspect handcuffs, blood on his body. reporter: where did you see the blood? it was going down the left side of his pants. reporter: we re told the gun used was legal. he walked into the conservative family research council which lobbies against civil unions, gay marriage and abortion access and funding measures. its president recently spoke out in defense of the chick-fil- a s president for taking a stand against guy marriage. we re looking with the u.s. attorney gay marriage. we re looking with the u.s. attorney s office about what charges can be filed. no charges have been filed yet. reporter: police won t say what the suspect said before allegedly opening fire, but it was enough for local police to call in the fbi. now police have been interviewing corkin throughout the day. we haven t heard about any possible motive for the shooting. we do know the fbi was searching for corkin s vehicle
firefighters did make allegations. a woman was out a a morning run when someone tried to abduct her. she told police she couldn t understand what he was saying, so she walked up to the vehicle. that s when the men grabbed her, partially pulling her inside. she managed to break free and run away. the victim describes the vehicle as an older white car with four doors. new york s airport authority is investigating a breach. officials say a stranded jet skier managed to bypass the airport s $100 million security system this weekend. reportedly they got stuck in the middle of jamaica bay, he slammed to shore, climbed over a fence, walked past motion sensors and security cameras wiout incident. a delta air lines employee finally stopped him at the terminal. turning to our weather, it may be the calm before the storm, severe weather could be on the way for us. this is just a beautiful afternoon out here right now. we saw a pretty good weekend, but today just a gorgeous day
