Global travel retailâs ability to translate what had been healthy passenger traffic levels over the years into revenue-generating opportunities has been called into question once again.
In a wide-ranging and candid interview, Aer Rianta International (ARI) Chief Executive Ray Hernan told
TRBusiness that the conversion issue needs to be addressed moving forward.
“As an industry, we have not won the battle in recent years in terms of converting passenger volumes into strong underlying sales growth,” he explained.
“We probably took the eye off the ball given that the Chinese customer became so important for us all. It kind of hid the underlying weakness in terms of conversion per passenger. We need to reassess that, and it is a huge focus for us now.

M1nd-set’s China-focused study on traffic and shopper insights suggests the China travel retail industry will return to growth in 2021.
Swiss research agency m1nd-set believes there is âevery reason to be confidentâ about 2021 travel retail growth prospects in China. This is despite renewed travel restrictions imposed during the lunar new year period.
M1nd-set is making this forecast based on the latest research it has undertaken on the Chinese market.
According to m1nd-set, the China-focused study on traffic and shopper insights, demonstrates that 2021 will mark the beginning of a robust return to growth for the travel retail sector in China. This is in light of consumer confidence, shopper behavioural changes and the Chinese consumerâs ârelentless desireâ to travel.
That said, Northern Ireland continues to apply EU customs policies at ports.
You can enter Great Britain (England, Wales, Scotland) with a ‘personal allowance’ of up to 18 litres of still wine without paying duty or tax,
You can also bring in 42 litres of beer. Plus, in a third category, you can have
either:
Four litres of spirits and other liquors above 22% abv.
Nine litres of sparkling wine (12 bottles), fortified wine and alcoholic drinks up to 22% abv.
You don’t necessarily have to choose between your love of Port or Cognac. The government says you can split the allowances in this third category, such as by using 50% each of your spirits and fortified wine limits.

European Travel Retail Confederation (ETRC) President Nigel Keal has warned industry stakeholders that regulatory challenges facing the likes of tobacco, confectionery and alcohol have not been sidelined by legislators due to the health crisis.
In an opening address at the ETRC Annual Business Forum today (20 January), Keal called for greater collaboration within industry circles to address pressing threats to the future of the DF&TR sector.
“Duty free and travel retail has faced a considerable number of regulatory and political challenges. Covid has not made these threats disappear; quite the contrary, and ETRC will continue defending the channel against threats relating to product categories and the shop environment.
