On Tuesday, June 6, Kanturk AFC Senior players achieved something which is likely to never be topped by winning promotion to Division 1 of the Munster Senior League in what is just their second year at this level. Heart, unity, passion, togetherness and a team spirit like no other squad are the main reasons for this unprecedented successful season. Led by Captain Martin O’Riordan, who typifies everything good about this team and was playing in his 20th season in a row for the seniors, he and this team will go down in the history of Kanturk AFC as the best we have seen. There were many downs this season but how they bounced back from them and stuck at it is a credit to everyone. Colin Walsh’s name was added to the list of All Ireland medal winners from Kanturk on Sunday last when the Cork U20 hurlers completed the season with a 100% record of six championship victories, which included the four Munster round robin games, Munster final and culminating with All-Ireland success over Offaly at Thurles. When Cork led 1-11 to 1-09 at the interval little did one suspect the game would be put to bed so quickly in the second half. Straight from the throw in Cork goaled and six points followed over the next eight minutes to give Cork an 11 point advantage. Cork never looked back thereafter and ran out winners on a final score line of 2-22 to Offaly’s 3-13.
