The UK and EU have accused each other of acting in bad faith in relation to the movement of goods to and from Northern Ireland. Last week, the UK Government took the unilateral decision to extend the grace period for checks on goods flowing via Northern Ireland until October - a move the EU says threatens to breach international law.

“Ms Prentis (who infamously admitted to having not read the Withdrawal Agreement as she was too busy organising her local Nativity Trail) promised that ‘..any access negotiated with the EU will cover only the UK’s exclusive economic zone, and not the 0 to 12 mile zone. That remains the case’.”
However, Mr Percy said the week before the Agreement was signed, no fewer than 17 large Belgian beam trawlers had been working the six-mile line between Hastings and Brighton.
He added: “It is little wonder then that our own inshore fishermen’s main complaint these days is that there are few fish making it through this European curtain of large scale fishing effort and to within reach of these smaller scale fishermen.

Brexit continues to hang over the relationship between the EU and the UK and this was reflected in mid-January. ZEDRA, the global expansion specialists, noted in January the EU s parliament voted in favour of changing the regulations of what constitutes a blacklisted country.

Fishing rights was central to whether a Brexit trade deal could be agreed or not between Britain and the European Union during negotiations. Both sides eventually agreed that 25 percent of EU boats fishing rights in UK waters will be transferred to the UK fishing fleet by June 30 2026.
