A very good morning to you. Thanks so much for joining us. Im laura garciacannon. Im sam brock. We, of course, are following breaking news in the south bay. The fire burning in the Santa Cruz Mountains along the lomapre prieta ridge line. All the residents there. This fire has rapidly grown over the last, not even 24 hours. Started about 3 00 yesterday afternoon. Weve been in touch with cal fire overnight, reaching out to emergency crews. The glow clearly visible even on my drive in this morning, up 101. 1100 acres have burned so far, already up. Those mandatory evacuations for the area covering 300. The red cross set up three emergency Evacuation Centers, one in morgan hill, one at so Cal High School as well as the Presbyterian Church in morgan hill and the Jewish Community center which is familiar to so many in that so cal area up there. 1100 acres, as you mentioned, burned so far, laura. The questions this morning become wind patterns and the hundreds of firefighters trying to estab
Of the fog. Above it is where the loma fire is burning. Still 73 degrees in the hills. Not as hot the last few days. We should see cooler temperatures, and the marine layers deepening which will help things out along the fire lines. The cooldown badly needed on the Santa Cruz Mountains, where the loma fire continues to burn mostly out of control. Here is the laeest in terms of the numbers. The fires burned through 2200 acres, up to 10 containment this morning. One home and six out buildings have been destroyed. Bob redell is out there and will have an update later this morning. As we mentioned yesterday, there were a lot of reenforcements needed to get to this point today. The number of firefighters went from 350 to 500 on the front lines, bringing in tankers and choppers as they did more air drops and used more fire retardant. It appears to have calmed the spread of the fire. A very fierce fire season. Firefighters say its only intensified in the past few months. We spoke to one firef
Reporter ill tell you, sam, the richmondsan rafael bridge remains a mess. The westbound lanes are still open. From this vantage point, the approach seems to be looking good. The chp has just told us that the eastbound lanes will not reopen until 1 30 this afternoon. Now, it all started just after 8 00 this morning when a big rig carrying 24 tons of contaminated soil hit a krail and burst into flames. The cab of the rig burned, but fortunately the trailers carrying the contaminated dirt did not. The chp says tow trucks are en route and caltrans will inspect the eastbound deck to make sure its safe before reopening it. They just told us that that will not happen until 1 30 this afternoon. I did talk to a man who was on the bridge removing scaffolding when the accident happened. He says he has never seen anything like it. The car ran into the krail and was engulfed in flames and blowing up. The guy was on the other side of the krail, you know, that i seen. We had guys down there, but we a
Yesterday afternoon and quickly it jumped. It quickly went to 200, 500 and now over 1100 acres, only 5 contained. Some of the challenges for the firefighters out here, the hot temperatures are leading to very dry fuel, and this is very steep terrain. Its not easy to access. There are evacuations which kris will touch on later. We know 300 homes at one point were threatened and we know at least one home has burned. Unfortunately, if we have people that dont heed our evacuation request then were in a position where we have to provide rescue usually with those people. My basic plan is to protect my property and my family. Ill be the last one to leave if we have to. Reporter still no determination on what caused yesterdays fire. If you look back out here live, youre looking at the fire burning on loma prieta, theres communication equipment. We talked with a Santa Clara County sheriffs deputy, theres no more fuel for that fire so it wont be burning in that area. This fire right now is burni
