Reporter ill tell you, sam, the richmondsan rafael bridge remains a mess. The westbound lanes are still open. From this vantage point, the approach seems to be looking good. The chp has just told us that the eastbound lanes will not reopen until 1 30 this afternoon. Now, it all started just after 8 00 this morning when a big rig carrying 24 tons of contaminated soil hit a krail and burst into flames. The cab of the rig burned, but fortunately the trailers carrying the contaminated dirt did not. The chp says tow trucks are en route and caltrans will inspect the eastbound deck to make sure its safe before reopening it. They just told us that that will not happen until 1 30 this afternoon. I did talk to a man who was on the bridge removing scaffolding when the accident happened. He says he has never seen anything like it. The car ran into the krail and was engulfed in flames and blowing up. The guy was on the other side of the krail, you know, that i seen. We had guys down there, but we all got out of there. So once that happened, everybody cut and ran. Reporter he says that that car, that truck, exploded two times as he watched. Fortunately, the man the driver is okay. Again, the chp says that the eastbound lanes will reopen at about 1 30 this afternoon. Apparently they had to clean up about 100 yards of diesel that had spilled onto the bridge before they were able to let the cars that were stuck there leave. And that has happened. The cars have been allowed to get off the bridge. But they were stuck for quite some time. Again, the estimated time of reopening is 1 30 this afternoon. Reporting live in richmond, im jodie hernandez, nbc bay area news. A messy situation for a lot of drivers this morning. Jodie, thank you very much. Hopefully you made plans to get around that backup. If you need options. Mike has been tracking this problem all morning. He has the alternatives. Looking over toward the richmond side, the opposite side from where jodie reported. As she talked about, the commute direction, westbound, its operated relatively smoothly. As the fire broke out on the lower deck of two decks on the bridge it was a problem for the westbound direction. Slowed for a bit. Then they reinstated traffic flow. The problem is on her side its jammed from 101 through san quentin and all the way to just shy of the bridge. Theyre routing folks off at main street and heading back toward the freeway. Your alternate instead of the san rafael to Richmond Bridge is eastbound 37. Once you get out of novato its slow towards vallejo. Thats a problem until as jodie said about 1 30 when they have the eastbound deck reopened. South to the Golden Gate Bridge youre okay. You have to navigate through the city and then get back on the eastbound bay bridge. Is the bay bridge is okay but getting through the city can add a lot of time. Highway 37 may be better. To the south, the other story, the fire. Where drivers have reported seeing smoke all yesterday afternoon. We saw the glow from the flames this morning, likely to see more smoke as well this afternoon. I hand it off to you for the rest of the story. To our other breaking news story. Firefighters racing to save homes from on outofcontrol wildfire burning in the south bay. The loma fire is burning along the Loma Prieta Ridge halfway between 17 and 101. Its mushroomed beyond 2,000 acres of land, virtually doubling overnight. We have been bringing you Live Team Coverage since this morning, midday Sharon Katsuda is following the vertexes and rob is tracking the weather conditions. Bob is on the front line watching the flames burn up the mountainside. Bob. Reporter good morning, sam and kris. As you can tell by my face and what rob has been saying all morning, the conditions are not ripe for getting a handle on this fire thats burning, as you can see, at the base of loma prieta. You can see its burned well over 2,000 acres. The heat is extremely hot. Here we are just before noon. You do have some wind. Over to your right you can see the air attack thats been going on for just, if you look straight ahead, you can see another tanker dropping more fire retardant. An air attack thats been going on for a good two hours. Cal fire has requested six air tankers. They have two or possibly four already out here. Theyve requested 12 helicopters to do water drops. Four are already on the way. Theyve also put in an order for an additional 150 firefighters to join the 350 firefighters already out here on the front line. We did speak with a battalion chief earlier. He is not sure if the order will come through. He needs the reinforcements, one, to fight the fire and, two, to protect the homes out here. There are many homes south of this fire, about 300 structures that are threatened. And throughout the morning weve been walking in this area and weve been noticing that they have crews assigned to each home, or at least thats what theyve been trying to do. Thats why they need the extra man power. Two houses have been destroyed. We spoke with a man who didnt want to go on camera earlier. Through his tears he told us he lost everything, including his dog. One thing about this fire thats frustrating for the firefighters, yes, youve got the steep terrain. Its very inaccessible out here. Also youve got what they term to be extreme fire behavior. The type of fire behavior that they believe has become the norm over the past ten years one because of Climate Change, they say and, two, because of the drought. When we talk about extreme behavior were talking about a fire that this is less than 20 hours old. It started as 100 acres. Quickly jumped to 200, 500, 1100 and overnight it doubled and we are here we are at over 2,000 acres and 5 containment. Bob, youre absolutely right. The speed at which this fire has picked up truly has been remarkable. As crews wait for reinforcements and focus their strategy, lets take you to the command center in gilroy where nbc bay area Sharon Katsuda has been talking to officials dispatching the crews. The speed of the fire has forced many evacuations. Reporter thats right. Bob is right. Theyre asking for more help and theyre getting it right now. I can tell you that much. Engines have been coming in and roaring out of the staging area here in gilroy. The firefighters weve talked to have said they havent seen anything like the fires were having right now. Every morning in gilroy they have a briefing at about 7 00 like this one they had earlier today. Then the new shift heads out to take over for the overnight crew. Theyre all working 24hour shifts and facing a hot dry and extremely dry fuel. This fire is backing against the wind and putting up 30 to 40foot flame lengths. Up to 100foot flame lengths coming off the fuel with very little wind. The expectation with the hot weather again today is that, you know, the fire will continue to grow. Reporter firefighters from san mateo, Alameda County and other agencies are here to help. Firefighters say theyre also running into Marijuana Plants so they were reminded to call Law Enforcement if they run into that. Were also seeing a lot of inmates out here in their orange jump suits in the staging area. Theyre here to fight the fire too. We heard bun one suffered a min injury to his eye. Thank you, sharon. Weve seen tweets from the san jose fire department, Santa Clara Fire Department and theyre headed out to offer reinforcements as well. Evacuations, mandatory now, will remain in effect for the time being. The red cross of Silicon Valley will continue to operate the three shelters. I just got off the phone with them. They say Soquel High School will remain open on old san jose road in soquel. The levy Family Center at the Jewish Community center and the marringen hill presbyterian church. The red cross of Silicon Valley asks we remind people, if you are an evacuee. You dont have to spend the night. Stop by for a meal and to get information. A lot of people affected by the evacuations. And the heat thats going on. More of the same for today. Lets go to rob. Its 87 degrees at 3,000 feet right now. Numbers this afternoon will be climbing into the mid 90s. Around 4 00 near the loma fire. Look at the humidity levels. Staying in the teens. So its a combination of heat, very low humidity and, again, the drought has accelerated some of the burn rates with the wildfires there burning around the Santa Cruz Mountains. Pointing out, too, the wind speeds. They may pick up this afternoon as the onshore push of the marine air comes back. You can see how the fog fills back in around monterey bay. The problem is here, the elevation of the fire, closer to 3500 feet, likely still staying warm and dry higher up even as we begin to see cooling at sea level which takes the edge off the heat at the valleys starting tomorrow. Back to you. That will be a welcome change. Rob, thank you very much. Another attack on the elderly. Police are on the hunt for a group of michigasked robbers wh attacked a couple in orinda. They robbed the couple at gunpoint. The man was pistol whipped and the woman was shot twice. Her injuries are not considered lifethreatening, thankfully. After the pair handed over valuables the men took off on foot and police have not yet released more information on the suspects descriptions. Up next at 11 00. I have a feeling that by the end of this evening im going to be blamed for everything thats ever happened. Why not. The coveragiali kword cordi last long last night. Reporter there was so much thrown back and forth between the candidates, so much tumult, so much anger. There was so much disagreement over the minor details. Gerston says the campaigns will go over the details and prepare for the next debate. People watched at the pris ideogolf course and in democrats in lawfurel village. Here is what people had to say. When trump said hillary has had 30 years to think about her policies and she hasnt gotten them right she was more measured. Her temperament was better. She had better answers to the questions. When the school year started at stanford one student was in a weird position, the hybrid position of being a junior and a senior at the same time. He is 65 years old. Bob keene is technically, by age, a senior but he is also a College Junior. He returned to the farm to finish the undergraduate degree he began more than four decades ago. I was here in 1970, 1971. I left to help build a clinic in a lowincome community that needed health care. I would like to find a way to improve health care so that it doesnt cost so much. Hes definitely on to something. I think its a good reason to take a break from college. Keene is majoring in comparative studies in race and ethnicity with a focus on health care. He plans to graduate with the class of 2018. Never too old to go back to school. Never too young to exercise. Or you know what, its better also if youre in an Elderly Population as well. Turns out this is the best way to keep elderly adults mobile and independent as they get older. A yale study put 1600 adults over the age of 70 into two different programs. People in one program, who exercised, ended up suffering from fewer disabilities over the following three and a half years. And not just that. They were also more likely to recover from their disabilities. The exercise program was mostly walking. Though the curls would probably help too. I like the little weights. We continue to follow our breaking news out of the loma fire in the Santa Cruz Mountains. As temperatures kick up, firefighters wage a battle to save 300 homes threatened by the wildfire. The loma wildfire burning near the loma prieta summit in the south bay sneaking its way south and east. Lets check in with bob redell who is live on the front line. Bob. Reporter good morning to you, kris and sam. We are at a staging area at the base of loma prieta. Theyre bringing in more firefighters. If you look into the sky thats a tanker, one of several and a spotter plane to the right thats been leading the tankers in to drop lots of retardant on the fire. Over here is where a lot of the fire is burning. One of the main lines. Loma prieta. At the top of the peak you can see a line of firefighters up there. I show you this to give you a sense of how serious cal fire is taking this fire. The fire exploded in less than 24 hours. Its an example of what they say is extreme fire behavior. The kind that would have been unheard of ten years ago. Probably the new normal. With Climate Change and the drought that were constantly in here. Its just going to be a constant battle. Reporter the battalion chief is in command of the wern flank of the loma fire. 24 hours after starting, its still giving him a headache. The terrain is difficult and narrow and borderline inaccessible. Reporter this morning he has called in six air tankers, 12 choppers and has his fingers crossed for an additional 150 firefighters on top of the 350 already on the front lines, with containment at only 5 , he needs all the help he can get. Holding what we had last night. Reporter many crews are assigned to protect the homes sprinkled throughout the mountains. One home owner stayed behind to keep the flames away from his trailer. The fire has already destroyed two houses. They dont know which ones, and i saw on the news reports one of them, which was nextdoor to me. Through his tears he indicated that he lost everything, including his dog. Youre back out here live looking at this fire thats burning on the western flank of the loma fire that is now over 2,000 acres. 5 contained. And to give you a sense of the Additional Air support, not only do they have the six tankers, a dozen choppers that we mentioned and also a dc10 aircraft which can dump a tremendous amount of retardant. Right now its flying in a Holding Pattern around the area waiting for direction on where to dump its load. Reporting live in the Santa Cruz Mountains, bob redell, nbc bay area news. Thank you, bob. It makes me feel the urgency of what we do, providing people information in situations like this one. Hundreds of firefighters are still facing that uphill battle in that rugged terrain. A difficult access. Again, 300 or so structures in the pathway of the fire right now. Well get the latest part of the story from nbc bay areas Sharon Katsuda who is live at the staging area in gilroy. What are you hearing right now . Reporter it is heartbreaking to hear the stories that bob is telling about. Lost homes. Were seeing a lot of firefighters arriving right now to help out, to help prevent losing even more homes. The engines just arrived in this staging area. Some are coming from the front lines, some are heading out to the front lines. So a lot of activity here as they roll in and out. Account 57 every morning in gilroy theyll have a briefing like this one they had earlier today. Then the new day side shift heads out to take over for the overnight crew. Theyre working 24hour shifts and facing a hot day and extremely dry fuel. Every Commanding Officer is m emphasizing safety. Be aware of the fire behavior. Watch whats going on. All evacuation orders have been lifted. That fire began on sunday and neighbors in the area say they raced to get out of their homes as fast as they could. Very dark smoke. And very flames you could see from the freeway. Cal fire reopened the roads last night. And the 1500acre fire, again, is now more than half contained. Lets turn to meteorologist rob mayeda with an update on how the weather conditions are really making this a very difficult firefight for firefighters. Rob, the plume of smoke was so dramatic too. We were seeing the winds aloft pushing the smoke to the south and east. The view around the peninsula or from san jose, you cant miss the smoke plume. Maybe not climbing as tall vertically as yesterday when we saw the pyrocumulus cloud develop, the thunderstorm like structure powering up and that particular wildfire fueling itself with its own winds. Right now temperatures in the 80s, humidity only 16 . Temperatures going through the afternoon in the 90s. You have the combination of hot temperatures there, very dry conditions, and the winds may try to pick up a little bit more out of the northwest as we go through the day today. Notice the temperatures here in red. Those are 90s in the hilltops. During the next 24 hours, even as the marine air comes back, at that elevation where the loma fire is burning, likely staying above the cooler marine air. Humidity levels, while theyll improve along the coast and inner bay, around the fire lines theyll still see hot temperatures likely still in the upper 80s to 90 and the higher hilltops into tomorrow, even as the rest of the bay area sees big cooling in the middle part of the week. Back to you. The other big story were following this morning, the closure of the richmondsan rafael bridge from richmond to san rafael. This morning that essentially shut down all movement eastbound on the bridge. Its been that way for hours save for one brief pause when they cleared it off to get all the people who were stuck on the bridge off the bridge. Its been closed ever since. Jodie hernandez was reporting out there earlier this afternoon for us basically telling us that 1 30 right now is the time theyre slating to reopen everything. Were going to continue to follow to make sure thats actually the case, but a mess for commuters this morning traveling eastbound into richmond from san rafael. More bay area Law Enforcement officers will be wearing body cameras in the near future thanks to a big grant. Yesterday the department of justice awarded 20 million worth of grants to counties nationwide to improve the use of body cameras. Among them Alameda County, which won a 1 million grant. And the Foothill Deanza Community College District won an award for their use of the cameras. Blood centers are starting to test for the zika virus, all part of a nationwide directive aimed at protecting people on the receiving end of donor blood. Nbcs Brittany Glazer shows us what blood Center Workers around the country have to do to roll out the additional testing. Reporter donor blood components undergo extensive testing before recipients can use them. Director of operations jeff bakens said you can add another to the list. Theyll be testing specificallify for the zika vir in addition to the other things we test more. Reporter its meant to reduce the spread of the virus linked to birth defects. The virus can be transmitted in blood for up to 30 days. Its about making sure that the blood we provide our patients is safe. Reporter if you have been deferred from donating because of travel to a zikaaffected region, youll likely be allowed to donate again with this new screening tool. Currently there is a question on the questionnaire regarding travel, and that will actually be going away as we begin testing for the zika virus. Reporter the biggest effect will be on Blood Centers like life share who will be paying more for the testing. The only change for donors is signing a consent form to have their blood tested. The process for donors should be seamless. They shouldnt notice a change from that ends. There not be additional time or in the processing of the donation to the patient. Reporter states have until midnovember to comply with the dreki directive from the fda. Its National Voter registration day. There are places where you can stop by around the bay area. Santa clara county voters can stop by the campbell heritage theater and morgan hill is hosting a Voter Registration drive. You can find that on twitter. Alameda county voters can stop by the college. Staff will be helping with the registrations there. Were feeling patriotic, of course, as we talk about more elections. We are getting close. Only six weeks away. Decision 2016 now. Its the day after the first allimportant president ial debate, the oneonone with the spin still coming in on who performed better. Hillary clinton and donald trump went headtohead with some explosive election issues. Nbcs halle berry takes a look at the issue of temperament during last nights debate. Reporter temperament, the top trend of the night with twitter and facebook lighting up when donald trump said this. Well, i have much better judgment than she does. There is no question about that. I also have a much better temperament than she has, you know . I have a much better reporter hitting his rival. I said, theres a person with a temperament thats got a problem. Secretary clinton. Woo okay but its trumps temperament thats voters biggest concern. According to our nbc news wall street journal polling. The first debate, a kind of test with trump kicking it off seeming sarcastically solic lative. In all fairness to secretary clinton. Is that okay . Good. I want you to be very happy. Its important to me. Reporter for both candidates it wasnt just what they said but how they said it. Their expressions, speaking volumes. Split screens showing clinton appearing composed and sometimes amused. I have a feeling that by the end of the evening i will be blamed for everything thats ever happened. Why not. Reporter compare that to trumps more animated expression. Repeatedly interrupting clinton. Even rolling his eyes. Were you mad . Some people online said you seemed angry, that you were interrupting too much. I was not angry at all. Reporter in the spin room after the debate trumps team uniformly praising what they called his restraint. I was going to Say Something please. Extremely rough to hillary, to her family, and i said to myself, i cant do it. I just cant do it. Its inappropriate. Its not nice. Reporter the candidate himself pleased he held off on certain topics, like bill clintons past affairs. No, i am very glad that i didnt mention because chelsea was in the room. Indiscretions by bill, i didnt think it would be appropriate to do. Reporter did either candidate, in your view, look president ial . I think they each looked president ial to their own supporters in the course of this. I think what both candidates tried to do was to appeal to their base voters. If this was a debate that was supposed to persuade people in the middle to come to either side, i doubt if it accomplished that. That was Hallie Jackson reporting. If you think that was fun, lets do it again. The next debate takes place october 9th in st. Louis. Definitely not halle berry. I misspoke. Whoever said there is no crying in baseball certainly had it all wrong. The incredibly emotional night for fans and players of the miami marlins, who paid tribute to their beloved teammate taken away far too young. Night honored the memory of one of the games rising last night was an extremely emotional one for the miami marlins, as the team honored the memory of one of the games true rising stars, pitcher jose fernandez, who died in a boating accident over the weekend. And please bow your head and reflect with a moment of silence. It was a tearjerker. The entire team wore fernandez number 16 jersey. They took the field to play the new york mets less than 48 hours after learning their star pitcher had been killed in a boating accident. Sundays game against the brave was canceled. The 24yearold was immensely popular in south florida. Sam, you were saying that one of the batters put on his helmet and hit his first home run. Dee gordon, put on fernandez helmet, batted from the right side of the plate where fernandez hits from. Took the first pitch. Turned around, gave the helmet back to the dugout. Went to the other side of the plate. He has not hit a home run all year. He is a little guy. Next pitch, gone. Home run. The marlins won. They beat the mets last night 73. In the honor of jose fernandez. You could see the veteran players too, so moved. What an impact. Its a brotherhood. No question. A team that was not feeling the loss, feeling the wins of all of last season. Basketball fans, its almost that time again. The Golden State Warriors begin their Training Camp in oakland at their training facility. Yesterday we got a first look at the team during media day, which included a photo opportunity with star steph curry and the new addition kevin durant. The warriors first preseason game is october 1st and the regular season tips up on the 25th. Many people were worried kevin durant might upset the chemistry on the team. It seems to be just fine. Those are the splash brothers there. We could use splashing going on right now. You said, rob, there could be rain in the forecast maybe a week out . Not from the fog, mind you.
