And our conversation with two distinguished guests who join us in honor of the centennial celebrations of american author and space age visionary rate bradberry a master storyteller whose legacy exemplifies the festivals theme of american ingenuity. I am john, director of the center for bradberry studies at Indiana University school of liberal arts. Red berries encouragement led to the creation of the center will re preserve his entire home office, a lifetime of words and mementos of the papers correspondence and working library that remained in his home at the time of his passing in 2012 part his remarkable career spans seven decades. He grew up in the great depression. His family, his father had to take the family all the way from illinois to los angeles to find work in rate bradberry was never able to go to college. He has had a 30 year emmy and peabody awardwinning career in Television News and documentaries. Jeanne ellsworth has a nephd in social foundations of education from the university of buffalo and has devoted her life to teaching from Elementary School to prisms, to universities. The book is called the last negroes at harvard, 61 years ago harvard admitted 18 negroes, thats what we were called then, we were the largest number at that time ever admitted to harvard. We were from all different parts of the country, north, south, east, west, we came e fr different economic and socioeconomic grounds and they had been admitting blacks to harvard but only two or three at a time, most guys would go do their four years
Theres something elemental about speaking the story that puts it to a different task. Narrators bring stories to life in countless ways. The works of shakespeare, toni morrison, Jason Reynolds and Michelle Obama are ace are richer experience heard rather than silent we read. Because of an intimate experience youre not performing per se. You are narrating it. And constantly listening and now get out my iphone and make a recording of someone that might have some characteristic. I feel like its less of myself as a poet who performs and now its myself being let me hold your hand and tell you this thing i heard was so inviting people but its in a different way. If i dont give everybody the utmost respect and understanding and compassion and the im not doing justice to this book. Studies have shown that listening to audiobooks is a more Emotional Experience and tories shared through other mediums. Its not a movie. Its not a book but it has the best of both worlds.
