Stains found on the car belonging to the man accused of the first-degree murder of his former partner, and some other items, were confirmed as blood, a Cornwall court heard Friday.
Brandon Smeltzer, 27, appeared before Judge Laurie Lacelle Friday as his trial reached the end of its third week. Smeltzer was arrested and charged after Emilie Maheu, 26, was reported missing on Oct. 11, 2018, and found dead two days later. Maheu was the mother of Smeltzer’s young daughter and had grown up in Alexandria. Smeltzer confessed to killing Maheu, and faces life imprisonment with no possibility of parole for 25 years if convicted of planning the murder.

CORNWALL An Ontario Provincial Police officer recalled Wednesday his interactions with Brandon Smeltzer from the beginning of his investigation into the death of Emilie Maheu in 2018.
Smeltzer, 27, was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Maheu on Oct. 11, 2018. OPP were led to Maheu’s body in a South Glengarry cornfield by a farmer, and Smeltzer confessed to killing the mother of his young daughter just days later in his initial court appearance in the case.

The trial of a Nova Scotia man charged with the first-degree murder of a young Alexandria mother reviewed text messages on Thursday that supported testimony by other Crown witnesses as to the state of the relationship between the accused and the victim leading up to her death.
Brandon Smeltzer, 27, appeared before Judge Laurie Lacelle Thursday to continue testimony surrounding the death of Emilie Maheu, 26, including retracing the path he drove to the scene of the crime. Smeltzer faces life imprisonment with no possibility of parole for at least 25 years if convicted of the stiffer charge he’s being tried on.

CORNWALL The last civilian witness in a first-degree murder case completed her testimony Tuesday about the relationship between the victim and the man charged with her death as the court reviewed additional police recordings from the days after her disappearance and death.
Brandon Smeltzer, 27, of Halifax, appeared again before court on Zoom video. Emilie Maheu, from Alexandria, was 26 at the time of her death and had returned to her hometown after leaving Smeltzer in the spring of 2018.
